Innovation Need Needs assessment rationale  As part of the new Washington State Math Standards, second grade teachers are now responsible for introducing how to tell time and teaching it to mastery.  The innovation model was selected to help support teachers in the Cheney School District teach this new standard effectively.

Curriculum Support Materials Teachers will be provided with supplemental materials in addition to the adopted curriculum. This will assist teachers in meeting the new standard of telling time. Suggested support materials:  Student clocks  Teacher stipend for purchasing manipulatives and on-line math website subscriptions  Hands-on games and activities  District purchased daily calendar program: Every Day Counts

Instructional and Training Needs  Training for second grade teachers  District-wide in-service classes required  Training on using current adopted core curriculum  Training on using newly adopted supplemental materials ( Every Day Counts calendar program)  Collaboration time allotted for second grade teachers at each site  District-wide end of year second grade math assessment  Training for first and third grade teachers to help support standard  Collaboration time allotted for first, second, and third grade teachers at each site to meet together  District-wide in-service classes required  Training on using current adopted core curriculum  Training on using newly adopted supplemental materials ( Every Day Counts calendar program)

Non-Instructional Needs  Lack of resources at home to practice telling time  Computers  Clocks  Practice activities  Lack of parent involvement and understanding of mastery level requirement at second grade  Math night for parents  Newsletters  Activities sent home  Funding for teacher stipend  On-line subscriptions to time practice web-sites  Funds for additional manipulatives and games

Learning Environment Relevant characteristics of the Cheney School District*  New curriculum will be needed for every teacher  Entire supplemental package for each second grade teacher  Every Day Counts calendar program for all 37 grade band teachers  Cheney School District employs 37 teachers who will need training  12 first grade teachers  13 second grade teachers  12 third grade teachers  Approximately 23% of second grade teachers have been teaching five years or less * Data from school report card, school year.

Student Characteristics Relevant characteristics of the Cheney School District*  48% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch  15.4% of students qualify for special education  1.7% of students are transitional bilingual  Washington Assessment of Student Learning Data  78.3% of third graders passed the math WASL  By tenth grade math scores drop significantly to 61.8% passing * Data from school report card, school year.

Technology Support March 2009 levy was passed by voters resulting in…  Document cameras in every classroom  New computer labs in all schools  Math software purchased in recent math curriculum adoption

Time is running out! Help support 2 nd graders learn the new Washington State Math Standards for telling time
