YOUNG GOODMAN BROWN” THE ENDING Quester: Place to go: Reason to go: Conflicts & Trials: What he learns: Tinkers with quest structure—was what he learned real?

INTERPRETING: What do you think really happened? Is his society good or bad? Did it do Brown good or bad to see the people around him as corrupt & untrustworthy? CRITIQUING : What do you think? What about how we perceive the faults of others in our society? Should we be cynical or not? Who is someone you have lost faith in? Why did you? Was it fair to them? What people in our society have we decided are really hypocrites or have we lost faith in?

CHARACTERS

STATIC VS. DYNAMIC Static Character: Doesn’t grow or change through the course of the story. EX: The Devil in "Young Goodman Brown" Dynamic character: One who does grow and change. EX: Goodman Brown in "YGB”

ROUND VS. FLAT CHARACTERS Flat characters: have one dominant trait that controls them and their actions. They are not complex at all. Often comic relief or villains We don’t sympathize Useful in short stories EX: The henchman, Hiram and Bobby Lee, in “A Good Man.”

ROUND VS. FLAT CHARACTERS Round characters: have multiple traits that “blend and fight for supremacy (McKenzie 30). Characters we really care about, because they are more like us—we can truly like or hate them because they are more real. Mixed Motives Positive and negative qualities EX: Grandma in "A Good Man..."
