ILC-HiGrade annual meeting - 22 November 2010 ILC-HiGrade Meeting Cavity-Treatment at CEA Saclay (WP6) F. Eozénou

ILC-HiGrade : Cavity production and preparation Technical ChoicesLocation XFEL Surface Preparation Test IDESY ILC Final Surface Preparation IHorizontal EP + Ethanol rinsingDESY Test IIT-map or 2nd soundDESY ILC Final Surface Preparation IIVertical EP + Ethanol rinsingCEA Test IIIT-map or 2nd soundCEA Required equipements: 1)Vertical EP station 2)Ethanol rinsing set-up 3)Clean-room (ISO4) with HPR station 4)2nd sound detection system 5)Vertical cryostat with 1.3 GHz RF amplifier Program at Saclay defined with WP leader in Feb. 2009

VERTICAL EP SET-UP: CHOICE OF THE SUPPLIER 3 Companies have answered the call for tender Each candidate has complied with the specifications from the engineering phase Proposal for 1-tank and 2-tank configuration design for each candidate Choice immediate since CORELEC industries has: Shorter terms Cheaper proposal Contract signed on November 9th 2010

Fabrication in progress Acceptance tests in April 2011 Use of the VEP station fabricated in the frame of EuCARD & ASTRE programs

SET-UP FOR CAVITY PREPARATION Fabrication in progress To be delivered by the end 2010

Assembly and preliminary tests: January 2011 Commissioning in Cleanroom: Spring 2011 HPR SET-UP IN NEW CLEAN ROOM

FLOOR CONFIGURATION → Rinsing will have to take place in a different cabinet (Main Cabinet)

SAFETY ASPECTS The equipment has been taken into consideration in the procedure of the lab Previous experience with EP with single-cell set-up An update of the procedure including details of the equipment must be presented The redaction of this document is advanced

QUENCH LOCALISATION BY 2 nd SOUND DETECTION Sensors:  8 Oscillating Superleak Transducers (OST) received from Cornell  1 prototype electronic circuit fabricated at Saclay Unfortunately, no signal was measured from the OST sensors due cavity FE New BCP & VT in preparation OSTs CEA rotative temperature map system Single cell cavity J. Plouin Tests in VC with a 1-Cell 1.3 GHz cavity were undertaken: -With a T-map for quench localisation -With 3 OST sensors for qualification of the instrumentation and acquisition

→ Fluid enters the cavity at each cell → Flow depends on the cell location → Horizontal EP non uniform HYDRODYNAMICS MODELING FOR HORIZONTAL EP

Flow does not depend on the location of the cell → Flow study in the central cell #5 MODELING IN VERTICAL CONFIGURATION 2D Axi-symetry Modeling in stationary regime Navier-Stokes laminar Equations No sliping of the fluid at the surface Parabolic profile for the fluid entering the cavity v=0 vo v=0 Cathode Beam pipe Parabolic profile for the fluid 24 mm Z. Wang

ACID FLOW LOWER CLOSE TO THE CAVITY → Flow max at the cathode, low at the niobium surface → Different shapes have been investigated for improvement Flow configuration in the cavity for each line

FOUR DIFFERENT SHAPES TESTED Improvement of flow uniformity +33% Increase in flowrate close to the cavity +39% What about electrical field in the cavity? → Additional experiments

ELECTRIC FIELD MODELING → Cylindric cathode R =E Iris /E equator Standard Case: R>41 → Need for improvement → Iris Insulation → Proposal for alternative shapes 15V 0V Equator Cavity Iris

MODELING WITH CATHODE INSULATION With larger insulation R decreases from 31 down to 4 BUT removal rate will decrease at the same time equator V=0 Insulation

ALTERNATIVE SHAPES TESTED R=7,5 R=6,4 R=3,7 CONCLUSION: « RECTANGULAR » SHAPE PROMISING. WORTH BEING TESTED?

ILC-HiGrade : CAVITY PRODUCTION AND PREPARATION Deliverable nameResponsableWPDelivery dateComments Milestone 9: Cavity Goal DESY WP6 janv-11Cavities have been produced and process under control Deliverable 6.1: Cavity process DESYjanv-10Report on cavity processing Deliverable 6.2: Cavity gradient DESY/CEAjuil-11 At least 24 cavities at high gradient ??? cavities processed and tested by Saclay Deliverable 6.3: Cavity production DESYjanv-12Report on cavity industrialisation From the Description of Work Milestones have to be updated -Delivery of cavities delayed -Equipments for preparation and test are not yet available at Saclay How many cavities to be processed at Saclay ?

Surface preparation: Define EP/Rinsing protocol Use of alternative cathode shape? Are protection caps (for coupler and HOM ports) available ? Other tools ? Vertical tests: Fabrication of spare 2 nd sound sensors? Define the sequence of a reference test (power increase, 9 modes, …) Is a cavity frame available from DESY ? drawings ? What about the antennas for VT, HOM flanges and gaskets ? Is a review step by step of the sequence (from cavity delivery at Saclay to connection to the VT frame) necessary ? Qualification of the full sequence at Saclay with a « bad » cavity could help a lot What about the cavity transportation (and risk) between Desy and Saclay ? to be discussed on November 23th? CONCLUSION New equipments necessary at Saclay for ILC-HiGrade Program 1.For surface treatments (Vertical EP, Ethanol Rinsing) 2.For VT tests (2 nd sound…) They should be ready for 2d trimester 2011 Precise protocols have to be defined Low spending profile for the moment. Budget will mainly be used at the reception of cavities : acid for EP, helium for tests and manpower (cavity preparation, assembly and tests) R&D activities are carried out within this program
