Maps & Globes Geography Unit II

Maps & Globes There are three important lines that help us find our way around the world. 1.Equator 2.Prime Meridian 3.International Dateline These lines form a grid system A B C D E

Maps & Globes The equator is located at 0° latitude. The equator divides the earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Maps & Globes: Latitude Lines of latitude run horizontally. Latitude lines are also known as parallels since they are parallel and are an equal distant from each other. Degrees latitude are numbered from 0° to 90° east and west. 90° north is the North Pole and 90° south is the South Pole.

Maps & Globes: Longitude Lines of longitude denote north - south distance. The vertical longitude lines are also known as meridians. Meridians converge at the poles and are widest at the equator. Zero degrees longitude is located at Greenwich, England 0°. The degrees continue 180° east and 180° west where they meet and form the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean.

Maps & Globes: Longitude The lines of longitude divide the earth into Eastern and Western hemispheres.

Maps & Globes The main directions we use are called cardinal directions: North (N), south (S), east (E), and west (W) The compass rose shows us the in between directions. They are called intermediate directions. NE means northeast SE means southeast SW means southwest NW means northwest

Maps & Globe: Song Tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" If you like the oceans best, Travel east or travel west, If you like the cold and snow, North is the way you should go. If you like the hot, hot sun, Head down south for lots of fun! By Lori Williams

Maps & Globes Maps are an important tool for studying the use of space on the Earth. Mapmaking depends on the following to gather data: 1.Surveying 2.Aerial photography 3.Satellite Imaging

How to Read a Map Each map have elements, which help you to read and understand the presented information. 1.Symbols-Stand for capital cities, economic activities, or natural resources. 2.Colors-Show a variety of information on a map. The map legend tells what the colors mean. 3.Title-Indicates the subject of the map & tells you what the information contains. 4.Labels-Words or phrases that name features on a map.

How to Read a Map 5. Legend-Key lists and explains the symbols and colors used on the map. 6. Scale-Compares a unit of length on the map and a unit of distance on Earth. 7. Degrees-
