History and Description

V belt history Trade journal coverage of V-belts in automobiles from 1916 mentioned leather as the belt material, and mentioned that the V angle was not yet well standardized. The endless rubber V-belt was developed in 1917 by John Gates of the Gates Rubber Company. Multiple-V-belt drive was first arranged a few years later by Walter Geist of the Allis-Chalmers corporation, who was inspired to replace the single rope of multi-groove-sheave rope drives with multiple V-belts running parallel. Geist filed for a patent in 1925 and Allis-Chalmers began marketing the drive under the "Texrope" brand; the patent was granted in 1928 (U.S. Patent 1,662,511). The "Texrope" brand still exists, although it has changed ownership and no longer refers to multiple-V-belt drive alone.Gates Rubber Company. V-Belts The function of a belt is to transfer rotation from the powered pulley to one or more driven pulleys The belt must be designed and manufactured to transfer this power efficiently and reliably

V-Belts V-Belts work using the principle of the ”wedge”

Ken YoussefiMechanical Engineering Dept.7 Belts Belt drive is specially suited for applications where the center distance between rotating shafts are large. Advantages Eliminates the need for a more complicated arrangement of gears, bearings, and shafts. Runs relatively quiet. Simple to install. Requires minimum maintenance. It has high reliability and warning to failure. Reduce the transmission of shock and vibration between shafts. Belt drives are adaptable to variety of applications

Ken YoussefiMechanical Engineering Dept.8 Belts Disadvantages The torque capacity is limited by the coefficient of friction and interfacial pressure between belt and pulley. Because of slip and/or creep, the angular velocity ratio will vary between the rotating shafts and may be inexact. Low speed reduction ratio, up to 3:1. Belt tension needs to be adjusted periodically.

V-Belt Characteristics Less expensive than other forms of power transmission Start, stop and run smoothly Operate noiselessly and without lubrication Absorb objectionable and harmful vibrations Clean and requires minimum maintenance Rugged and long lasting Provide a wide selection of speed ranges Cover an extremely wide horsepower range Easy to install and to replace Relatively unaffected by moisture, abrasive dusts, or extreme variations in temperature Acts as a fuse for the system components

V-Belt - works on the principle of the wedge and relies on tension to create friction on the sidewall of the sheave to transmit power Synchronous or timing belt - relies on accurate and smooth meshing of the teeth on the belt with the grooves of the sprocket Two Major Belt Categories

Wrapped Molded which has a fabric cover and is molded into a V-shape Raw Edge which is cured and then cut into a V-shape Two Major Types of V-Belts
