Polycystic Kidney Disease By: Laine Lyles Polycystic Kidney Disease

Polycystic Kidney Disease Cysts, which are fluid filled sacs, form on the kidneys Can spread to the liver

Symptoms High Blood Pressure Back pain Blood in urine Larger abdomen than normal Kidney failure Complications with pregnancy- most have successful pregnancies, but can cause preeclamsia, fluid retention and proteinuria. Brain Aneurism- People who are younger than 50 have a higher risk than normal Mitral Valve Prolapse

Two Types Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease Shows signs between 30 and 40 Only one parent needs it to pass it 90% of patients with PKD have this type Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease Early symptoms Less common Both parents must have abnormal genes If both parents are carriers the child has 25% chance of having it

Questions What are the causes of the symptoms? Kidneys have become larger and can cause pain in the side, the blood isn’t being filtered properly and therefore cause more pressure on the walls of the blood vessels causing high blood pressure, and because of improper filtration causes blood in the urine. What are other possible causes of symptoms? Kidney stones can cause pain in the back and side and a Urinary Tract Infection can cause pain as well. What kind of tests are needed? Ultrasound, CT Scan, MRI CT scan- put on a table through a circular machine that sends x-ray beams through the body MRI- large cylinder with magnetic fields and radio waves that go through the body and make a picture
