Name: _______________ Class: _______________ Date: _______________ Unit 2 Geography Challenge – The Arabian Peninsula and Surrounding Lands Directions: Refer to the maps and the “Islam in Medieval Times” passage on pages 74 and 75 to answer the following questions. Name: _______________ Class: _______________ Date: _______________ Shading and Labeling: Lightly shade (purple) the lands that were part of the Islamic World by 750 on your map. Label the 3 continents that surround the Arabian Peninsula on your map. Lightly shade (blue) and label the bodies of water on your map (hint: 1 ocean, 5 seas, 3 gulfs). Lightly shade (yellow) and label the physical feature that formed the southern boundary of Islamic lands in Africa. Lightly shade (brown) the physical feature that formed the northern boundary of Islamic lands in western Europe. Label 7 cities on the Arabian Peninsula that you think might have been important trade centers. Questions: Why do you think the southern boundary of Islamic lands in Africa stopped where it did? Why do you think the northern boundary of Islamic lands in western Europe stopped where it did? Thinking about the geography of the 7 cities you labeled on the Arabian Peninsula, what common characteristic do you think made them important trade centers?

How would the route of a trader traveling from Makkah to Cairo differ from the route of a trader traveling from Makkah to Baghdad? Which city on the Arabian Peninsula is closest to Cairo? How do you think this might have affected the relationship between these two cities? How might the location of the Arabian Peninsula have contributed to the rapid spread of Islam? Based on what you have learned about the geography and religion of medieval Europe, why do you think Muslims were unable to conquer much of that continent?
