Hazard Communication City of Burlington

Introduction What’s it all about: Workplace chemical usage How we use them How we protect ourselves Chemical labeling Chemical storage

Chemical Usage Used everyday to make our lives easier Improve industrial processes

How to Use Chemicals ALWAYS read labels, labels contain information on proper usage as well as safety information Consult material safety data sheets (MSDS) for additional information Use recommended safety equipment and procedures

Personal Protective Equipment What type equipment is needed Specific types of PPE required REMEMBER: PPE is your last line of defense

Chemical Labeling All chemicals on City property should be labeled including waste chemicals at all times If chemicals are transferred to a secondary container, re-label or contact Safety Director for additional labeling NEVER bring chemicals from home

Chemical Storage Storage of chemicals can be a dangerous mixture Avoid incompatibilities Read labels for warnings and store appropriately

Chemical Inventory Requirements MSDS’s must be maintained for each chemical on hand. Every department has a MSDS notebook that must to be kept up to date as new items are purchased, introduced or revised. Employees, new and old, must be trained on new chemicals before use.

Chemical Inventory Tips! Every department needs to designate the updating task to one individual. Schedule updates and audits. Limit the introduction of new/trial products. (stick with what works) Store dry products over wet. Protect labels at all cost. Never purchase more than you need.

Questions??? Do you know what a MSDS is? What does a MSDS do? Do you understand HazCom? Were is your MSDS notebook? Who performs updates? Do you have questions? Did you complete the training roster?

Conclusion If you have questions please contact the City of Burlington, Director of Safety (336) Please sign the training roster upon completion of this course.
