Intro: Ethos, Pathos, or Logos? Debate: Developing your argument to solidify your side.

DO NOW (Reflection: One paragraph 7-10 sentences) What is Jay-z’s claim? What is Oprah’s claim? List the evidence each use to support their claim. Obj. #1: SWBAT persuade an audience using one of the three persuasive techniques; ethos, logos, pathos. Obj. #2: SWBAT determine the target audience of a claim.

Who is Aristotle? Aristotle was a famous Greek philosopher who studied the art of persuasion. Aristotle was student to another famous Greek philosopher Plato. He was also the teacher to Alexander the Great, who was famous for his skill in debate and public speech. The Greek philosopher divided the means of persuasion into three categories--Ethos, Pathos, Logos.

ETHOS, PATHOS, and LOGOS – AS YOU ANALYZE THE ADVERTISMENTS: Ethos: Is it Ethical/Credible? Pathos: Does it make you feel a strong emotion? Logos: Does it make you use your sense of reason? What facts/stats help prove yhour claim to be true?

Ethos Ethos : Ethics To make the audience decide right or wrong about what is being presented to it, or is the source speaking credible and reliable. Political issues, national beliefs, religious issues, etc… Typically has contrasting colors symbolizing the difference between good and evil.

Pathos Pathos : Emotion To make the audience feel something about what is presented to it Children, animals, illness, memories, etc… “Tugs at your heart strings”

Logos Logos : Logic To make the audience think about what is presented to it Statistics, facts, authorities, etc… Very straightforward, and not “fluff”. It has a very scientific, factual approach.

Ethos, Pathos, or Logos?

FOR EXAMPLE: – #1: Michelin Tires – Little Baby – Don’t skimp on the important stuff, we need good tires our families depend on it. – Pathos (little babies are cute and we want them to live)
