Presentation transcript:

Simple Machines A simple machine is a device that can multiply a force or change the direction of a force.

Simple Machines Levers The first simple machine that we will discuss is the lever.

Simple Machines Levers The lever is a simple machine made with a bar free to move about a fixed point called a fulcrum.

Simple Machines Levers The lever consists of three parts. The fulcrum, load, and a rod.

Simple Machines Levers First Class Levers The first class lever is the one with the fulcrum in the center.

Simple Machines

Second Class Levers For the second class lever the load, is in the center

Simple Machines

Third Class Levers The third class lever has the effort in the center.

Simple Machines

Third Class Levers The third class lever has the effort in the center.

Simple Machines The inclined plane is a sloping surface that connects two points together. In common English, we call it a ramp.

Simple Machines

The longer the length of the ramp, the easier it is to do the work. However, the object will have to me moved through a greater distance.

Simple Machines A screw is also another type of inclined plane. If you unwind the thread from the shaft you get an inclined plane.

Simple Machines

Wheel and Axle A wheel and axle is made up of a the small rod which is the axle which is attached rigidly to a large wheel, The two turn together.

Simple Machines

Pulleys A pulley is a simple machine made with a rope, belt or chain wrapped around a wheel.

Simple Machines Fixed Pulley A fixed pulley only changes the direction of a force.

Simple Machines Movable Pulley A movable pulley is a pulley that moves with the load. The movable pulley allows the effort to be less than the weight of the load, but the effort force must move through a greater distance than the load.

Simple Machines

Combined pulleys Combined pulleys makes make the effort needed to lift the load even less than a moveable pulley. The distance of travel for the input foce increases proportionately.

Simple Machines

Simple machines cannot decrease the amount of work required to move an object. The reduction in force is offset by the need to exert the input force over a greater distance.
