HOPE RENEWED Kennedy’s assassination hurt America emotionally people wanted new hope… and they would find it via television

IN BRITAIN

FROM BRITAIN

THE BEATLES what made the Beatles so special? unlike today, Britons could not buy American pop records in their stores unlike today, Britons could not listen to American pop music on the radio being from Liverpool, a port town, the Beatles were able to get these American pop records from the sailors who bought them to sell back home

THE BEATLES The Beatles learned the songs they got by slowing down the record with their hands and guessing what the notes and words were Paul McCartney was asked in by John Lennon because he knew Eddie Cochrane’s “Twenty Flight Rock” perfectly George Harrison was asked in by Lennon & McCartney because he could play the piece “Raunchy” perfectly

THE BEATLES more importantly, The Beatles learned music of different American genres — ranging from Motown to country when The Beatles played Hamburg, Germany, they learned to put an energy into their music to get attention that American music didn’t have at the time

AMERICAN MUSIC Motown was short for “Motor Town, USA”, the nickname of Detroit Motown Records was home to acts like The Supremes, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Mary Wells and Marvin Gaye Motown music used gospel-like harmonies with a blues- like rhythm, the basis of what we now call “soul” and “r&b”

AMERICAN MUSIC Motown was popular — but it had difficulty getting on television because the majority of its performers were African-American for harmonies in pop music, television aimed more at white musicians like Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons or those who had the “beach sound” of California like The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean

THE BEATLES Ed Sullivan was arriving in London when the plane’s landing was delayed due to crowds coming to welcome The Beatles back from France Sullivan booked The Beatles on his television show when Sullivan booked The Beatles, Capitol Records decided to change their minds and carry The Beatles in North America Canada’s first Beatles records were different than the U.S.

THE BEATLES Canada got into the Beatles earlier — and had three LPs instead of the U.S.’ two

THE BEATLES The Beatles immediately charmed the press with their sense of humour Q: “How did you find America?” A: “Turn left at Greenland” when they played Ed Sullivan, it was the most watched event in North American history all crime in New York City stopped for those three minutes

THE BEATLES

in 1964, The Beatles would tour North America after the release of their feature film A Hard Day’s NightA Hard Day’s Night they would play three cities in Canada: Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver they would not stay in Montreal because threats had been made against Ringo The Beatles would only play Toronto and Vancouver on their next trip

THE BEATLES the impact of The Beatles was that their competition back home was sought out for North America bands like The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, Herman’s Hermits and Gerry & The Pacemakers would become part of what’s called “The British Invasion” American bands began to copy the sounds they heard, resulting in a move back to guitar-based rock

CANADIAN ROCK two notable Canadian bands started in the 1960s out of Winnipeg came The Guess Who, best known for their anti-Vietnam song “American Woman”American Woman out of Toronto came Steppenwolf, best known for their song “Born To Be Wild,” which was featured in the 1969 movie Easy RiderBorn To Be Wild
