THE UNITED STATES AS A WORLD POWER Expanding our borders…

WHAT HAPPENS FOLLOWING THE PROGRESSIVE ERA? As the United States continues to improve on itself, many politicians are now seeking to expand our borders… HEY why not? We were doing well right? Control of Industry Women vote Stable economy and government Continuous improvement of our home… We were always seeking to expand our nation, but by the 1880s many leaders were convinced we should join imperialist powers of Europe

IMPERIALISM The policy by which stronger nations extend their economic, political, or military control over weaker territories (creating colonies) This was trending all around the world Economic Interests Expansion would increase U.S. financial prosperity. As industry grows, many saw colonies as a source of cheap raw materials New markets for U.S. made products Military Interests Economic interests were protected by military presence overseas… U.S. leaders are urged to establish a military presence overseas Belief in Cultural Superiority It was believed that the government, religion and race in the U.S. was superior to those of other societies. Spread Democratic ideas Advance Christianity

IMPERIALISM LED THE UNITED STATES TO A LARGER ROLE ON THE WORLD STAGE But: Is imperialism a good principle or a bad principle?

ALASKA William Seward 1867 arranges a large purchase from Russia Turned out to be a great bargain for the U.S. because it was a territory rich with resources

HAWAII Early 1800s, Christian missionaries move to the Kingdom of Hawaii to convert the local population Began sugar plantations and dominated the economy New Queen, wants to limit the power of planters But the U.S. policy favors sugar produced in an American state U.S. Marines and the planters overthrow the queen and set up government Good for access to trade in Asia – we attempt to annex it – but are denied…

THIS IS OUR FIRST SHOT AT IMPERIALISM It doesn’t work so well and soon we were at war once again…

THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR How it all started…

REBELLION AGAINST SPAIN Spanish empire is crumbling at the end of the 19 th century 1890 only owned a few colonies The people in the colony are unhappy Demanding independence Cuba revolts several times Spain sends General Valeriano “the Butcher” Weyler to crush the rebellion Placed many Cubans in camps where they starved The revolt in Cuba caused alarm in the U.S. Afraid the fighting disrupted U.S. trade with Cuba The U.S. press began to describe the brutality of the Spanish officials “yellow journalism” – type of writing that attracted readers by printing stories which described and exaggerated the truth

THE UNITED STATES GOES TO WAR William McKinley DOES NOT war… But…public opinion from the news reports demanded that McKinley take action McKinley demanded that Spain halt the harsh treatment U.S.S. Maine goes to Cuba Battleship was dispatched to protect the U.S. citizens after a revolt breaks out in Havana The U.S.S. Maine exploded in Havana Harbor a month later Not sure what caused the explosion – it was probably an accicdent American’s BLAME Spain April 20, 1898, President McKinley signed a congressional resolution that called for Cuba’s independence and demanded a withdrawal of Spanish Forces...he gave Spain 3 days to respond Sprain refused and the Spanish-American War began

SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR IN 3 MINUTES

TEDDY ROOSEVELT AND THE ROUGH RIDERS Roosevelt served in the Spanish-American War Helped organize the First United States Volunteer Calvary Called them Rough Riders

RESULTS OF THE WAR PLATT AMENDMENT Cuba had to add this to their constitution. Gave the United States the right to intervene in Cuban affairs anytime there was a threat to “life, property, and individual liberty” Cuba also had to allow a US. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay ANTI-IMPERIALIST LEAGUE Made up of many well known American businessman Carnegie, Addams, Twain Members believed that Americans should not deny other people the right to govern themselves This voice was lost and we continued our involvement overseas

IMPERIALISM America’s Fiasco

POWER IN THE PACIFIC Spread the involvement in Asia Annexed the Philippine's Opened up more of Asia to America’s new imperialistic ways…

POWER IN CHINA Many other nations are deeply involved in China… By the 1890s, France, Germany, Britain, Japan, and Russia had established prosperous settlements along the coast of China. Also claimed to have rights to industry in China’s interior regions Open Door Policy – the competition for pieces of China worried the U.S. so the asked for an “Open Door Policy” No single country should have a monopoly on trade with China Many Chinese were not a fan of the presence of Foreigners

POWER IN LATIN AMERICA U.S. needed a way for their ships to move from Atlantic Ocean to Pacific Ocean faster for better trade Panama Canal – shortcut that would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. DD BC64-BDD78D124D28?hasLocalHost=true DD BC64-BDD78D124D28?hasLocalHost=true

THE MONROE DOCTRINE? Who recalls what this doctrine says? 1904 – Roosevelt Corollary – an add on to the Doctrine Not only would the Doctrine prevent other nations from intervening in Latin America, but now it also authorized the United States to act as a “policeman” in the region. Excuse for U.S. to intervene in the domestic affairs of Latin America Many presidents following Roosevelt intervened in Latin America As a result Latin Americans saw the U.S. as an imperial power that only cared about it’s own interests…

HOW ARE IMPERIALISM AND U.S. INVOLVEMENT IN WWI CONNECTED?
