University of Granada Unigranovels Program for Sustainability Teacher Competencies in Higher Education UE4SD – Academy for ESD in HE

Main objective: To design an innovation and training program in the context of professional development at the beginning of a university teacher’s career. Institutional contex: Novel teachers’ training Program UGR: incipiante/2015/convocatoria 2 UE4SD – Academy for ESD in HE

Specific objectives:  Promoting the collaborative training between novel teachers and seniors.  Forming an interdisciplinary innovation and training group that promote the transfer of “good practices” between novel and senior teachers.  Enriching this plan in a pilot and a generalization phase with cooperation in virtual format of other members of the UE4SD Project. Participants  A group of senior teachers (among 3 and 5) involved to the development of sustainability competences in the teaching, researching and management field.  A group of novel teachers (among 9 and 15) from different areas interested in learning and improving their practices of sustainability in teaching, researching and management field. UE4SD – Academy for ESD in HE

Methodology  Face-to-face workshops (biweekly). Differents topics.  During this training each novel teacher will be supervised and guided by a senior teacher.  The training will be about the practical situations and case studies related with the development of sustainability competences in teaching (syllabus elaboration, activity design, evaluation of protocols…), in management (implementation of sustainability missions related to the decision making) and in research (co-supervisor of final degree work, final master work and doctoral thesis). Academy UE4SD The pilot UniGraNovels program steps: 09/1510/1511/1512/1501/1602/1603/1604/16 Needs Assesment : Selection novels and seniors interested and university centers. To create a network. Identify and prioritize the training needs about this topic from the novel and senior teachers perspective. Initial planning and work plan design Definition general objectives and the training and innovations actions. Establish the work calendar and the training seminar contents and monitoring the skills. Workshops: 3 face-to-face workshops: 2 sectorials, 1 novel/senior common 1 Virtual open forum to the members of the Workshop 1 with novel teachers: SWOT’ analysis of the training needs. Virtual open forum to UE4SD’s concerned members Diffusion and dissemination in the university contex and generalization of the training and innovation Program Contact with departments and schools deanship and UGR faculties to obtain their presentation and call for the training of groups. 6 UE4SD – Academy for ESD in HE

 A map of all the proposals, programs and actions developed in the University of Granada.  Visualize the set of proposals and resources of the University as a beginning in order to optimize resources and to coordinate training actions.  High initial motivation of the faculty.  High availability of teachers well experienced and with recognized carrers on the field.  Good attitude of the University in establish training procedures about sustainability.  Virtuality of the questionnaire.  A general unknowing of sustainability programs, proposals, calls, services and resources of the University inside the university.  The complexity of the university structure and services, prevent novel teachers to have a general and complete overview at the beginning of their career.  The need and the urgency to improve their CV, the teaching, writing papers, collaborations in research and innovation projects, and obtain enough achievements to be promoted, become a limitations on the training time.  Training courses of more than 10 hours, mean a high sacrifice of available time  Sustainability is not training priority  Low apperance of sustainability on the syllabus.  Low/none training/experience in sustainaibility  Sustainability Policy of the University?  Low participation on the questionnaire.  Hard to delimit novel/senior with or without experience  Difficulties to arrive at teachers SWOT Analysis- Weaknesses UE4SD – Academy for ESD in HE

 A working group has been created for developing the design of a sustainability action plan and training actions, with representatives of university.  Proposals to include sustainability inside innovations, teachers training and mentorship of novels, programs.  Start of personal interviews between novel and senior, as the begining of the mentorship program.  Start of a content analysis of different subjects syllabus.  Proposals to introduce a virtual training, including Ceuta and Melilla, and allowing a better management of time  Good attitude of senior with recognized carrers to develop a mentorship program  Begining of a program of training devoted to the staff of the university, in order to undertake ECOAUDITING  Bases for a training coordinated and constant action. Expected results  To include the sustainability dimension to the novel teachers training.  To include this experience in the institutional Plan of the UGR about of novel teachers.  To elaborate a guide of good practices in sustainability in HE for novels teachers.  To promote changes in the teaching methodologies and curricular planning.  To include the sustainability as a normal practise in teaching, management and researching of members of the university community with less than 10 years of their professional career.
