OBJECTIVES Identify the importance of magnet hospitals. Identify why magnet hospitals are important. Discuss key concepts related to magnet hospitals. Discuss opportunities and challenges of magnet hospitals Explain the future use of magnet hospitals

INTRODUCTION In 1983 the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) conducted a study to find work environments that attracted and maintained well- qualified nurses who promoted quality patient care. The hospitals in the study that possessed these qualities were described as “magnet” hospitals because nurses were drawn to these organizations. What is a magnet hospital? A hospital with prestigious recognition from the American Nursing Credential Center ( ANCC). “Magnet Recognition is an organizational credential awarded to exceptional health care organizations that meet ANCC standards for quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice.” Benefits for Hospitals Magnet recognition enables hospitals to: Attract and retain top talent Improve Patient care, safety and satisfaction Foster a collaborative culture Advance nursing standards and practice Grow your business and financial success

IMPORTANCE OF TOPIC & RATIONALE Highest level of recognition an organization can receive for quality in nursing care. Recognizes excellence in nursing care, patient/family satisfaction and nursing satisfaction. Involves nursing staff in shaping research-based nursing practice and data collection within the hospital. Provides exemplary care from compassionate and qualified nursing staff. Decreases the staff nurse turnover rate. Navigates away from rituals and traditions, and focuses on data from evidence-based practice in providing the most efficient and effective care for patients.

OPPORTUNITIES According to Smith(2014), Magnet hospitals and Magnet-in-progress hospitals proved to be statistically significant in providing improved patient care reported in the following HCAHPS questions Nurses always communicate well Pain was always controlled Medications were always explained Given information for recovery time Rated hospital as 9-10 on 1/10 scale Would definitely recommend hospital This research provides evidence supporting Magnet hospitals and should persuade non- magnet hospitals to begin the process of becoming a Magnet Hospital.

CHALLENGES Cost The Magnet Recognition Program will cost the hospital from $100,000-$600,000 per year depending on the hospital size. The hospital should analyze the cost compared to the future benefits and weigh the pros and cons for applying to the Magnet Recognition Program Time The magnet Recognition Program takes an average of 4.25 years to complete.

OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPROVE If hospitals do not commit to the program they can implement values from the Magnet Program such as The Magnet Recognition Program emphasizes the importance of implementing EBP into the work place and providing continual nurse education ANCC’s Magnet hospitals provide and create positive nurse practice environments to enhance employee experience.

FUTURE USE… For Employers: Magnet Organizations represent the very best in health care. May strive for Magnet status to achieve: Improved ability to attract and retain nurses Higher JCAHO scores Higher Patient Satisfaction Cost benefits (from lower RN vacancy, turnover, lower staff needle-stick and injury rates, and recognition as an indicator for bond rating agencies) Medicare Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) Program: Uses patients’ subjective reports of quality care as a reimbursement measure for hospitals If you are interested in a Leadership role, encourage your hospital to begin the process to apply for Magnet Recognition.

FUTURE USE… For Patients: May choose hospitals based on: Lower mortality rates Shorter lengths of stay Increased patient satisfaction For Nurses: Everyone wants to work somewhere they feel satisfied and valuable. When you are choosing where you want to work upon graduation, consider Magnet Hospitals if you are looking for: Increased nurse empowerment Increased productivity Decreased emotional exhaustion Increased job satisfaction Decreased feelings of burnout Decreased rates of occupation health hazards Better perception of quality of care provided

FUTURE USE… Many studies have shown significant reported outcomes in these areas for nurses working in Magnet Hospitals. Magnet hospitals exist all over the country, do your research and find Magnet hospitals near you: l.aspx l.aspx Magnet Hospitals in Tampa: Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute Tampa General Hospital

KEY POINTS A magnet hospital is an exceptional health care organization that meets ANCC standards for quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice. Purpose of a Magnet Hospital: to navigate away from rituals and traditions, and focus on data from evidence-based practice to provide the most efficient and effective care for patients. The program has statistically improved patient care BUT the is very expensive and takes years to complete. Employees want this program to attract and retain good nurses. Patients prefer these hospitals and will visit these magnet hospitals before their local hospital when applicable. Nurses have higher satisfaction rates and will be more productive while having a lower chance of becoming burnt- out.
