Rasputin was a “starets” (holy man) from Siberia… Became a close friend of the Royals after healing Nicholas’ son, Alexei… Alexei was a haemophiliac, meaning his blood did not clot easily – any small cut or bruise could have killed him… R. was a drinker + womaniser… it was rumoured that his lovers included the Tsarina and her eldest daughters… (Prob not true… BUT people believed it!) Became more influential after Stolypin’s murder… The Tsar’s opponents said R’s influence was a sign of Nicholas’ unfitness to rule… … murdered by several nobles in 1916…
