7 th Grade Health

 Muscles are needed for bending and moving. Muscles work in pairs, flexors and extensors.  The extensors relax and stretch as the flexor contracts to bend the joint.  Then the flexor relaxes and the extensor contracts to straighten the arm or leg of that joint.

 Tendons are bands of fibrous tissue. These bands connect the muscles to the bones.Tendons  Ligaments are long, fibrous straps. These straps fasten bones together. Ligaments

 Muscle strains happen when a muscle is stretched too far.  This can occur  when someone lifts something too heavy  When someone doesn't stretch to get blood circulating into the muscle before exercising.  Symptoms include experience pain, limited motion, muscle spasms, and possibly muscle weakness. They can also have localized swelling, cramping, or inflammation and, with a minor or moderate strain

 Muscle sprains are caused by an injury  such as over extending a muscle by twisting.  This is most common in ankles.  symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, instability, and loss of the ability to move and use the joint

 Sprains and strains sometimes require a doctor's attention.  This is especially true if there is swelling and discoloration or pain is intolerable.
