The muscular System

The muscular system is made up of… musclesandtendons

How many muscles do you have?  You have about 650 muscles in your body.  Your muscles make up half of your body weight.

Your muscles are important because they…  Hold your organs in place  Hold your bones together so that you can move  Pump your blood  Allow you to run and play

What are muscles made of? Stretchy, elastic cells and fibers

What are Tendons? Tendons attach muscles to your bone helping your body move. Tendons attach muscles to your bone helping your body move.

Feel your tendon right above your heel in the back of your leg. This is the thickest tendon in your body.

 Muscles that are voluntary are under your conscious control.  Muscles that are involuntary are not under your conscious control

There are three different types of muscle 1. Smooth Muscle 2. Skeletal Muscle 3. Cardiac Muscle

Smooth muscle  Smooth muscle cells are spindle-shaped and have one nucleus and no striations.

Smooth Muscles Smooth Muscles  Smooth muscles are usually not under voluntary control (involuntary)  Smooth muscles are found in the walls of hollow structures such as the stomach, blood vessels, and intestines.

Skeletal muscle  Skeletal muscle cells have striations, or stripes, and many nuclei.

Skeletal Muscles Skeletal Muscles  Skeletal muscles are usually attached to bones.  Skeletal muscles are responsible for such voluntary movements as typing on a computer keyboard, dancing, or winking an eye.

Skeletal muscle  Skeletal muscle is sometimes called striated muscle.  Skeletal muscle cells are large, have many nuclei.

Skeletal Muscle  It is a voluntary muscle.  This muscle can get tired after time.

Cardiac Muscle Cardiac Muscle  Cardiac muscle is found in just one place in the body—the heart

Cardiac Muscle  Cardiac Muscle has striations.  Cardiac muscle is involuntary

Cardiac muscle  Cardiac muscle cells have striations and usually only one nucleus.

How Muscles and Bones Interact  Skeletal muscles generate force and produce movement by contracting, or pulling on body parts.  Skeletal muscles are joined to bones by tough connective tissues called tendons.

How Muscles and Bones Interact  Most skeletal muscles work in opposing pairs. When one muscle contracts, the other relaxes.
