A Letter from Zhang Ming to Mr. Smith Zhang Ming Senior Grade I, Jinglin Middle School Nanjing Jiangsu Province, People’s Republic of China April 20, 2005

218 Green Street Manchester, England Mr. Smith, How are you? I still remember the day when we met on the Great Wall last month. I’m very glad to make friends with you. Now I have something to bother you. I’m not sure about two

things. Could you kindly give me a reply? The first one is: what are the differences between Mrs. and Madame and in what situations can we use them? The other is about the culture in your country. I know that the British like drinking tea, but why and

when do you drink it every day? will be deeply grateful if you can answer my questions. Best wishes, Yours, Zhang Ming

How to write an English letter? A formal letter is usually made up of five parts. They are heading, greeting, body, closing and signature.

When we write the letter heading, we should write down the writer’s name, address and the date on the right above the receiver’s name and address on the left position below the writer’s.

When we begin writing a letter, we must write the greeting. We can use “Dear..., My...” when writing to friends or relatives or other close persons. When we write to a stranger or other people in formal occasions, especially a business letter, we usually use “Mr...., Miss..., Mrs....”.

The letter body is the most important part of a letter. It usually talks about what we think, what we want to know or learn and what we should introduce to others. It usually consists of two or three, sometimes even more paragraphs according to how many things to talk about in the letter.

We are ready to finish the letter and we usually close the letter by saying some blessing words or phrases such as “All the best”, “Best wishes” or saying “I’m looking forward to receiving your reply/answer letter/hearing from you as soon as possible”, “I’m expecting to meet you again” and so on. When we

sign the letter, we usually use “your friend/sister...,” or “with love” with our names on the line below between friends or relatives; we can also use “Yours,” “Yours sincerely/truly/ faithfully/ever,” or “Truly/Sincerely/Faithfully Yours” with our names on the line below.

Writing Task 1. The passage says that Rosanna sent Franklin a letter. What do you think she would have written? Suppose you were Rosanna, please write a letter to Franklin.

Dear Franklin, How are you? We’ve not seen for a few days, so I have been missing you very much. Perhaps you don’t know at all that I’ve been in love with you since I saw you the first time. I love you much more than my life.

Do you remember what happened several days ago at Rachel’s home? All of us felt very angry and astonished when the next morning we heard the unlucky news that the Moonstone was missing. We all guessed whoever could have stolen the Moonstone. I’ve ever

doubted Godfrey might have stolen it. But I found I was wrong because I found the paint stains on your clothes the next morning when I cleaned your bedroom. Not until then did I realize you had stolen the diamond. I couldn’t believe it!

How sad and disappointed you know I felt at that time? You oughtn’t to have done that! Do you know you would be accused of the theft? But you needn’t worry about that any more because I’ve hidden the evidence. I’d like to keep the

secret forever for you so that you couldn’t get into trouble because I love you. I hope you can learn a lesson from this. Best wishes! With love, Rosanna

Task 2. How does Sergeant Cuff feel about accusing Rachel of taking the Moonstone? Write a letter from Sergeant Cuff to Rachel apologising for his mistake. A Letter From Sergeant Cuff to Rachel Verinder

Sergeant Cuff May 15,1848 Miss Rachel Verindar, I’m glad to have known you at your home a few days ago. I’m writing this letter to make an apology to you for my mistakes about accusing you of taking the Moonstone. I feel very sorry.

During the investigation, I had doubted several people including Dr Candy, Franklin, Godfrey and Rosanna. However, I made mistakes when I found you had been always refusing to answer my enquiries about the Moonstone. I misunderstood that you had taken

the diamond yourself and that you might have debts to be paid off with the diamond. But now I have learned about the fact that Franklin had moved the Moonstone to his bedroom to keep it safer for you during his dream without awareness.

Then Godfrey had stolen it from Franklin’s bedroom, for he had known that some people had seen Franklin move it to his bedroom and they would accuse Franklin of the theft. The next morning, Godfrey left for London where he was murdered

and the Moonstone was stolen again. It is said that the Moonstone had been returned to the moon god in India and had been put on the forehead of the moon god’s statue. Until now it turned out that you are innocent.

Now I have known the truth. I fell terribly sorry and guilty. I must make an apology to you for my mistakes. I hope you can forgive me. And we will still be good friends.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon! Yours sincerely, Sergeant Cuff
