How Can We Group Animals?
How do we classify vertebrates? Know that living things are different but have similar characteristics.
Classify: to sort into groups. Students will classify organisms into groups and relate how they determined the groups with how and why scientists use.

Presentation transcript:

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones Vocabulary words: vertebrate- an animal with a backbone

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones Vocabulary words: warm-blooded- a kind of animal whose body temperature does not change much

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones Vocabulary words: cold-blooded- a type of animal that gets its heat from outside its body.

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones Vocabulary words: amphibian- a cold-blooded vertebrate that spends part of its life in water and part of its life on land

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones Vocabulary words: reptile- a cold-blooded vertebrate that has scaly, waterproof skin, breathes air with lungs, and lays eggs.

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones Vocabulary words: bird- a vertebrate that has a beak, feathers, two wings, and two legs

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones Vocabulary words: mammal- a warm-blooded vertebrate with hair or fur; female mammals produce milk to feed their young.

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones Vertebrates are grouped into seven classes: Cartilaginous fish Jawless fish Bony fish Reptiles Amphibians Birds Mammals

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones -The largest class of vertebrates are bony fish.

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones -Cartilaginous fish (cold-blooded): Example- Sharks and Rays

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones -Jawless fish (cold-blooded): Example- Lampreys

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones -Bony fish (cold-blooded): Example- tuna and goldfish

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones -Reptiles (cold-blooded): Example- lizards, snakes, turtles, and alligators

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones -Amphibians (cold-blooded): Example- frogs, toads, and salamanders

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones -Birds (warm-blooded): Example- Bald Eagle, Cardinal, Robin

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones -Mammals (warm-blooded): Example- Humans, Kangaroos, Sheep, Bats

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones -The 3 main groups of mammals are classified by how young are born. 1. Mammals that lay eggs: duck-billed platypus and the spiny anteater

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones 2. Mammals with Pouches: Kangaroos, kaolas, and opposums.

Lesson 2 – Animals with Backbones 3. Mammals that develop inside: Sheep, bats, apes, and all others
