NECROTIC LARYNGITIS CALF DIPHTHERIA, LARYNGEAL NECROBACILLOSIS

Bovine (calf) calf diphtheria (Gram stain - paraffin sect)

Definition Acute to chronic infection of the laryngeal mucosa and cartilage of young cattle is very common, particularly in feedlots.

Etiology Laryngeal contact ulcers probably provide a damaged mucosal surface, which then allows invasion of the cartilage by F. necrophorum, which is the proximate cause of the lesions.

Clinical Signs most commonly in calves from 3 to 18 months of age moist, painful cough severe inspiratory dyspnea open-mouth breathing loud guttural stertor neck extended anorexia depression fever hyperemic mucous membranes bilateral nasal discharge and a fetid odor to the breath The larynx may be visibly or palpably swollen many calves will die in 2 to 7 days as a result of systemic effects of bacterial toxins and upper airway obstruction.

Differential Diagnosis pharyngeal trauma severe viral laryngitis (e.g., IBR) actinobacillosis, laryngeal edema abscesses paralysis tumors

Diagnosis The diagnosis is usually made presumptively based on clinical signs alone. A laryngoscopic or endoscopic examination can help confirm the diagnosis Acute cases show changes in the CBC consistent with any acute septic condition: leukopenia caused by neutropenia with a left shift

Necropsy Lesions arytenoid cartilages Edema Hyperemia swelling of the mucous membrane around a necrotic ulcer In chronic cases the lesions consist of a focus of necrotic cartilage surrounded by purulent exudate

Treatment Tracheostomy Oxytetracyclin procaine penicillin G Sulfonamide Streptomycin Tylosin Tracheostomy

Control There are no specific control measures control other respiratory diseases
