What you will learn today Explain the interrelation between the environment and personal health. Discuss the role of government agencies in protecting the public health. Identify the health services provided by state and local agencies. Identify the role and services of nongovernmental health organization.

Warm-up Write in your own word your definition of PUBLIC HEALTH and the role it plays on your life? Due at the end of class. Name and answer on a signal piece of paper.

Vocabulary Public Health Public Health – Protection and promotion of health at the community level.

Federal Public Health Services Department of Health and Human Services. ~ Health Resources and services Administration (HRSA): Give access to services for people without health insurance. ~ Center for Disease Control (CDC): Monitors diseases trends and out breaks. Also does prevention and controls illness and injury.

Federal Public Health Services ~ Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Makes sure food, medication, cosmetics, and medical devices are safe and effective. ~ Indian Health Services (HIS): Gives medical and dental care to American Indians and Alaska Natives.

State and local Health Agencies Every state in the USA has a health department. In Pennsylvania what is the department called? Local county's have public health departments. They do the same as the Pennsylvania department of health.

Nongovernmental health Organization What is a nongovernmental health organization? American Heart Association Asthma and Allergy foundation of America American Cancer Society All these organization perform some type of research in there area to find cures. They also help people with the disease and ways to prevent it.
