AFRICAN PARTNERSHIPS FOR PATIENT SAFETY 2009 – The World Health Organisation met with the Ministers of Health of 46 African Countries and agreed to take action on Patient Safety – Gondar University Hospital and the University Hospitals of Leicester were chosen as partners to become first wave implementers.

PATIENT SAFETY ACTION AREAS There were 12 action areas and Gondar selected 5 priorities: 1.IPC – Hand Hygiene 2.Safe Surgical Care 3.Health Care Worker Protection 4.Health Care Waste Management 5.Research

IPC HAND HYGIENE WHAT DO WE DO WELL? Staff training 2 x Pharmacists went to Malawi to learn how to make Alcohol Based Hand Rub. Small manufacturing unit established at Gondar Hospital Appointed full time IPC Nurse Obtained appropriate equipment CLINICAL AUDIT
