Silver Award Girl Scout Proposed Project Revitalization of the Quarry Woods Trail By Sierra Zahares

The Trail Outline = 1 mile

Current Status The trail path needs maintenance The trail could use more signage to mark vernal pool areas and historic quarry The trail is not marked or found easily – Directions are : Follow Bow Street from downtown Freeport, and turn right onto Lower Mast Landing Road. A trailhead is located approximately.3 mile south, on the right by a woodchip pile. During non- school hours, the Woods may also be accessed from Mast Landing School on Bow Street. At the back of the School parking lot, visitors should pass the pond to the left to find a trail.

Proposed Improvements to the trail for my project Ecological Signage could be added to help identify local wildlife, birds and insects indigenous to the trail Cleaning or grooming of the hiking trail to ensure the whole trail is well marked & easy to follow Carry In / Carry Out signage Property rules signage

Plan for Action Create a volunteer group to help groom trails and clean up trails where needed Obtain donations from local businesses to create substantial signage where needed to help identify trail features and wildlife

Time Line for Project Meet with Conservation Board on June 19 th to obtain permission Present the project plan to Girl Scouts of America as a Silver Award Submission and gain approval Begin Project in summer / fall of 2013 if project is accepted Work on signage throughout winter of 2013 Place signage onto trail in Spring 2013 Spring Open Maintenance and grooming on trail where needed
