Food Chains and Food Webs
Roles in Energy Transfer
Energy—The ability to cause change.. Ultimate source of all energy is from the sun. Autotrophs A.K.A--Producers Uses light energy to make food Examples:
Energy transfer. Energy sources The sun provides almost all the energy to sustain life. Producers use Photosynthesis or Chemosythesis acquire the energy.
Food Chains and Food Webs. Food Chains Food Chain: a step-by-step sequence linking organisms that feed on each other All food chains begin with a producer,

Eating for Energy How does energy flow through a food web? How do organisms interact with each other and with the environment in which they live?

Why do animals need to eat?

Food provides energy for animals to survive. Survive means to grow and reproduce.

Invertebrate card Sketch the organism & copy the name onto a post-it note

Invertebrate card Sketch a picture of an organism the invertebrate eats on a post-it note; include name and its diet

Invertebrate card Sketch a picture of an organism that eats the invertebrate on another post-it note; include name and its diet

Invertebrate Card O Discuss with your partner your invertebrate, what it eats, and what eats it. LOOK for any overlaps between your invertebrates. O Same food item (prey or plant)? O Same predator or prey? O ARRANGE YOUR POST-IT NOTES on the butcher paper to make a FOOD CHAIN. O What other prey or predators might link your organisms?

FOOD WEB O Create a model that represents interactions between organisms in a pacific northwest forest ecosystem. O A FOOD WEB is used by scientists to describe and understand how forest ecosystems function. O Food chain is a linear model and a food web shows multiple branches and interactions.

Can you place organisms in your food web? O Draw pictures of additional organisms you think need to be included. O Make sure you have several autotrophs in your food web. (Use the post-it notes) O Circle all the producers in green, primary consumers in yellow, secondary or higher consumers in red, and decomposers in blue. O Chemical energy can be transferred from one organism to another. Draw in arrows to show this transfer of energy FROM the food TO the eater. O Your food web must include at least 20 organisms and 30 arrows.

Unique to this food web O Northern Spotted Owls O Flying squirrels O Pileated Woodpeckers O Truffles (fungi) O Can you place these species in your food web?

Can you place the Northern Spotted Owl in your food web? O Pileated Woodpecker excavates holes in trees. When they abandon these holes, flying squirrels use them as nest sites. The fungi grow on the forest floor. Their roots spread across tree roots and help the trees acquire important nutrients. Flying squirrels eat the fungi. O What would the food chain be for this sequence?

Can you place the Northern Spotted Owl in your food web? O Food Chain: OWL eats SQUIRREL eats FUNGI

What are some of the reasons the Northern Spotted Owl is an endangered species?

O They build nests in very large old conifer trees(old growth) and there are very few of these trees left. Without very large trees, the spotted owl can’t reproduce. O They feed on flying squirrels as well as other rodents, amphibians and birds.

What if… O A population of wolves were introduced to the area? O How would the presence of wolves affect the organisms in their food web? O What do wolves eat? O What eats wolves? O Would this species affect the food web?

What if… O What animal population could be introduced that will not affect the food web very much?
