Patriots  Americans who supported separation from Britain; wanted independence

Patriot - Advantages  Fought on own ground; not 3,000 miles from home  Had a very personal stake in the fight  Leader – George Washington  Washington * courageous * honest * determined

Patriots - Disadvantages  British population was larger – 8 million to 2.5 million  Britain – strongest navy in world  Britain – well-trained army  Americans – not a regular army or navy. Used a militia  Not all Americans supported the war.

Loyalists  Also called “Tories”.  Remained loyal to Britain

Loyalists – Why Stay Loyal?  Loyal to the church  Jobs depended on loyalty to king  Fear of a change in government  Some did not know about the tension between colonists and king

African Americans  Promised freedom if they fought on British side  Became Loyalists  Some states enlisted African Americans – served as Patriots  By end of war, every state except South Carolina enlisted African Americans.  Rhode Island – all African American regiment

Women  Began to take part in war  Were Patriots  Took over duties of men while they were at war
