A Man of God & A Promise of God Lesson 6  02/17/16

“… The word of the L ORD came to Elijah in the third year...” (1 Kings 18:1b)

“And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, ‘The L ORD, He is the God; the L ORD, He is the God.’” (1 Kings 18:39)

“… Go show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.” (1 Kings 18:1c)

“They that go down to the sea in ships …” (Ps. 107:23)

Elijah Claims a Promise

A personal promise made to Elijah.

Elijah Claims a Promise A personal promise made to Elijah. A conditional promise based upon Elijah’s obedience.

Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain” (1 Kings 18:41) Hebrew word translated “sound” is most often translated as “voice.”

Kneeling on the Promise 1)Elijah separated himself. “Elijah went up to the top of Carmel.”

Kneeling on the Promise 2)Elijah humbled himself. “He crouched down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.”

Kneeling on the Promise 2)Elijah humbled himself. “He crouched down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.” “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time.” (1 Pet. 5:6)

Kneeling on the Promise 3)Elijah was specific. “Go up now, look toward the sea.”

Kneeling on the Promise 4)Elijah was persistent. “And he said, ‘Go back’ seven times.”

Kneeling on the Promise 5)Elijah was expectant. “And it came about at the seventh time, that he said, ‘Behold, a cloud as small as a man’s hand is coming up from the sea.’”

“The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain; and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the sky poured rain, and the earth produced its fruit.”(Jas. 5:16b-18)
