Order online at A survey on usage of personal care products especially cosmetics among college students Dua Abdulhadi Ahmed College of Applied Medical Sciences, Sattam Bin Abdul Aziz University, Saudi Arabia Introduction: The harmful health effects of personal care products especially cosmetics are engulfing many societies of the world especially the female section without an alarm. There are no early symptoms of the use of the cosmetics even after several years. But surely the constant and prolonged use of the cosmetics leads to many health issues such as fungal infections, dry eye, hair fall, dizziness and even fertility. Aim & Objectives: The present research survey aimed to evaluate the prevalence of personal care product especially cosmetics usage among Saudi female college students in Wadi Al Dawaser province and to assess their experiences, in an attempt to arouse general awareness about the ill effects of chemicals present in personal care products-cosmetics for this society. Methodology: The present study is a cross-sectional study carried out in a total of randomly selected 106 college students (female) at undergraduate level. Two colleges for girls of Prince Sattam Bin Abdul Aziz University at Wadi Al Dawaser region were included. Standard questionnaire was set in Arabic and English both. This was then circulated among the students. Data on usage of cosmetics by students and their knowledge/experiences about its adverse health effects were collected. All data were recorded accordingly and statistically analyzed. Results: 1-Marital Status of students investigated: Out of 106 female students, 11.3% were married and 88.7% were unmarried; mean age 21±2.44 years; range years. The average age of first use of cosmetics among the Saudi females came out to be 16 years with a range of years. Figure 1: Age and marital status distribution of female students involved in this study. 2- Age of first use of cosmetics by the female students investigated: Among the study group, the age of first usage of cosmetics by the female students ranged from years with a mean of 16 years (SD = 2.73 years). The age 16 had the highest percentage reflecting that it is the most likely age for first usage of cosmetics, followed by the 15 and 20 years of age. Figure 2: Distribution of age for first usage of cosmetics by female students. 3-Percentage of cosmetics applied per day by students investigated: The study shows that among a total of 106 students, 68.8% (73) students applied cosmetics daily. Moreover, 21.6 % (23) students applied twice to thrice daily! Only 6.6% (7) doesn't apply at all. Also 80.2 % (85) students are not facing such health issues. Figure 4: Distribution of skin/eye irritations/health problems among the female students. 5-Percentage of students having knowledge of presence of chemicals such as propylene glycol (PG), polyethylene glycol (PEG), parabens, phthalates, dioxane, etc., present in personal care products(cosmetics) studied: The present study shows that among a total of 106 students, 66.1% (70) students had prior knowledge about the presence of chemicals such as PG, PEG, parabens, phthalates, dioxane, etc., in personal care products/cosmetics. Conclusion According to our survey, the overall prevalence of using cosmetics/makeup/ personal care products was considerably high among college going Saudi students in Wadi Al Dawaser Region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A significant percentage of Saudi female students are using these cosmetics on every-day basis. Moreover, majority of the students were unaware of the harmful effects or skin problems related to the constant use of the cosmetics/makeup. More awareness is thereby necessary for timely accepting the harmful and prolonged effects of precarious chemicals and altogether abolishes the use of such products. Therefore, it is worthwhile to spread awareness of deadly effects of chemicals among the Saudi female students so that relevant health education programs can be planned and implemented effectively. Recommendations: Studies on larger sample size. Collect the questionnaire from other colleges in and around Wadi Al-Dawaser to represent the whole population. Holding workshops and programs to arouse awareness among female students about the harmful effects of cosmetics after prolonged use. The young Saudi Arabian female society will be in future aware of the harmful effects of prolonged use of cosmetics and personal care products and hence benefit in future.
