ECAL LED monitoring system upgrade status 04/09/20131
Material 04/09/20132 The main orders are placed: 30 km of fiber: Polymicro 7000 ferrules: AMS Technologies two MINIPOL.1 polishing machines: Fiber Optic Center Black plastic end pieces and nuts for the PMT end: 6500 pairs ordered to UNIPLAST (Vladimir). Delivery expected beginning of November. Not much work done, because of vacation period in July-August.
Preparation work 500 plastic holders for the LED end will be finished this week (Kirill). Formerly were produced out of Plexiglas, now white POM (simpler to machine). LED end connector (16 or 9 fibers) 04/09/20133
Preparation work Selection of brightest LEDs (Sergei Ph.) 500 out of 1000 LED brightness, a.u. Left to do: solder wires 04/09/20134
Space We have to choose between 3 options: bld. 265 no temperature control, cold in winter the “blue zone” in bld. 156 prototype and “spare” HCAL modules are stored there, some crane work is needed to rearrange. ~1/2 of its area will be available after rearrangement. RICH barrack in bld. 156 OK, but there is a lot of RICH equipment – work to rearrange. We can occupy ~1/2 of the area (probably enough). 04/09/20135

Procedure for Module end ( for every fiber in a bundle): glue the fiber into the connector polish with the polishing machine control with a digital microscope, polish again if necessary Procedure for LED end (all the 16 (9) fibers): Glue all fibers together into a brass tube 1.25 mm inner diameter; polish with a polishing machine, controlling with a digital microscope; Glue the tube into the Plexiglas holder, together with a piece of 1.2 mm clear- PSM fiber (for PIN diode control). Module end connector (single fiber) Production procedure for 200 μm fibers LED end connector (16 or 9 fibers) 04/09/20137 is simpler: gluing and polishing instead of stripping and cutting by a cleaver (thin 10 µm coating is essential).
