What OCR need you to know Input, output and Storage a) How different input output and storage devices can be applied as a solution of different problems. b) The uses of magnetic, flash and optical storage devices c) RAM and ROM d) Virtual Storage

Input Devices Input devices allow data to be entered into a computer. Examples include: Keyboards Mice Microphones Scanners Joysticks TASKS 1.For each of the input devices listed above, describe how they work and give 2 examples where they could be used. 2.Research 3 other input devices, describe them and give 2 examp les of use.

Choosing an Input Device TASKS 1.Make notes on why each of the topics above need to be consider ed when choosing an input device. Types of Data Cost Considerations Where the device will be used Volume of Data User preferences

Output Devices Output devices allow information to be retrieved from a computer, they often show the results of processing. Storage Devices Storage devices are used to permanently store data when the computer is turned off. There are three main categories of storage device: 1.Magnetic 2.Optical 3.Flash TASKS 1.For each type of storage device list the different devices that use t his approach. 2.Describe how each of the different categories of storage device o perate.

Magnetic Storage TASKS 1.Explain how magnetic storage works. 2.Why are magnetic tapes still often used for backup servers? 3.Magnetic tapes use serial access, why is this not a big issue for it s primary use (archiving)? 4.What are the advantages and disadvantages of magnetic storage ? Many hard disks inside computers use magnetic storage (although SSD are beginning to replace them). Magnetic tapes are also popular and are often Used on backup servers.

Virtual (Cloud) Storage TASKS 1.What is virtual storage? Why is it useful? 2.How does virtual storage help collaboration? 3.Why was virtual storage less popular a few years ago? 4.What are the disadvantages of virtual storage? 5.What are people generally worried about when storing files online? 6.Where can virtual storage be found? Virtual storage has become more popular due to the increases in the amount of bandwidth of internet connections. NOTE: Do not get this confused with virtual memory they are two entirely different things.

How big is the data that needs to be stored? Does the data need to be rewritten? Why does the data need to be stored? How fast does it need to be accessed?

RAM & ROM TASKS 1.Identify 3 characteristics of RAM 2.Identify 3 characteristics of ROM 3.Where can you most commonly find ROM being used? Why? 4.Research one other way RAM can be measured other than by its storage cap acity. 5.Explain how data is stored and accessed in RAM. 6.What is the difference between DRAM and SRAM? Computer memory is divided into Read Only Memory (ROM) and Random Access Memory (RAM), they both have different uses in a computer.
