 half of the water in China’s rivers is unsafe for human contact GANGES  1 billion liters of mostly untreated raw sewage enters the river every day  Inadequate cremation procedures result in partially burnt or unburnt corpses floating in the river.

 Rivers in less developed countries run filthy, often serving as open sewers themselves  Absorbs millions of gallons of raw human, animal and industrial waste every day  Disrupts the aquatic ecosystems  A source of water borne diseases

POLLUTED RIVERS Causes 1. Industry 2.Sewage Effects 1.Water borne disease 2.Ecosystem damage

 Cloud of smog three kilometers deep, enveloping the whole of southern Asia  Industrial pollutants, carbon monoxide from vehicle exhausts and particles of soot from burning forests and millions of rural cooking fires.

 Affected area includes most of the northern Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, and much of the Bay of Bengal  During the winter monsoons, the cloud blows out from Asia over the ocean, and during the summer wet season it reverses direction to move back over the land.  Will get worse as the population increases.

 Blocks 15% of sunlight, which reduces crop yields.  Reduced sunlight also means that less water evaporates from the ocean - leading to lower rainfall and increasing the risk of drought.  Creates acid rain  Leads to respiratory illnesses  Reduces rainfall and causes extreme weather events.

ASIAN BROWN CLOUD Causes 1.Industrialization 2. Population Growth Effects 1. Global Warming/Acid Rain 2. Respiratory Illness

 1960S  Introduced high-yielding varieties of seeds  Increased use of fertilizers  Began irrigation methods (no longer had to wait on the once yearly monsoons). Could grow crops twice a year  Using chemicals damaged the land and polluted rivers.

GREEN REVOLUTION Causes 1. Chemical Fertilizers 2. Irrigation Effects 1. Contaminates Water Supply 2. Degrades the land
