Before you move in: –Discuss who is bringing what. –What are you willing to share? –What are you not willing to share? –Do not show up with a Uhaul. –Are you trying to feng shui the room? –What color linens are you going to purchase? –Are you getting a microfridge or loft? Your First Two Weeks –Fill out your roommate agreement (discuss with RA). –Be realistic with regard to guests, food, & sleep hours. –Revisit the roommate agreement after two weeks and talk realistically. –Get the RA involved if you feel you need mediation. –Room Freeze

Effects of Homesickness Signs to Look for: Thinking about home a lot Anxiety Decreased motivation Irritability Loneliness Social withdrawal Things you can do: Allow time to adjust to your new surroundings Talk about your feelings to your family, friends, RA, or counselor Bring plenty of pictures from home to post around your room Get Involved in campus activities

Effects of Homesickness DO Make plans to visit home Call your family/ friends Learn what helps you relax- deep breathing, exercising, music Be realistic when it comes to expectations about college Seek campus employment Can appear at any time, but common after the “honeymoon” is over DONT Go home every weekend Call every hour of every day Participate in activities that involve heavy drinking or drug use; it makes it worse Set yourself up to burn out Work so much you don’t have time to enjoy college

Getting Involved RHA is the designed for residents on campus to get involved in their experience. CAN (Community Assembly Night) is designed for residents in each building to get involved in their experience. Resident Assistants are there to ensure you have a positive community to live in! Desk is there to assist you if you are locked out of your room, want to check out games or cleaning supplies. If you are interested in applying, check out our page.

Staying Safe on Campus Things you should do: Walk with a friend at night Lock your door when you sleep/ leave the room Read through your rights and responsibilities online Get Renters Insurance- Talk to your home owner provider Bring your health insurance card Things we provide: Live In Staff Locked 24 Hour a Day facilities Fob/Key Card Access UNKPD Campus Safe Walk UNK Alert Things to NOT do: Prop locked doors Hold open doors for stangers Give Key/ID to another person

UNK Alert UNK conducts drills semester and annually for emergency situations such as fire or tornado. UNKAlert will notify you any time the campus community is impacted by a significant emergency or dangerous situation which involves the immediate threat to the health and safety of the campus community. –To receive emergency messages from UNKAlert that your telephone numbers and addresses are kept up-to-date in MyBLUE. Students may Opt-in for text messages in MyBlue.
