Reading Chapter books by the end of Year 2! Working at the expected standard The pupil can: • read accurately most words of two or more syllables • read most words containing common suffixes* • read most common exception words*. In age-appropriate books, the pupil can: • read words accurately and fluently without overt sounding and blending, e.g. at over 90 words per minute • sound out most unfamiliar words accurately, without undue hesitation. In a familiar book that they can already read accurately and fluently, the pupil can: • check it makes sense to them • answer questions and make some inferences on the basis of what is being said and done Chapter books by the end of Year 2!

Subtract mentally 2 digit numbers when there is no regrouping required (e.g. 74 − 33). Use the inverse for missing number (e.g. ∆ − 14 = 28) Know the 2, 5 and 10 times table. Can work out other times tables using arrays or other methods. Know the fractions 1/3 , 1/4 , 1/2 , 2/4 , 3/4 and one whole. Use different coins to make the same amount The pupil can read scales in divisions of ones, twos, fives and tens in a practical situation where all numbers on the scale are given The pupil can read the time on the clock to the nearest 15 minutes. The pupil can describe properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes

Phonics Screen – Year 1 (Year 2 retakes) Week commencing 13th June 20 real and 20 pseudo words to test phonetic skills. More information given before Easter Phonics packs given out for Easter holidays.

What can you do? Reading Writing Maths Read as often as you can! Talk about the book Ask lots of questions about the word choice, characters and plot. Writing Practise spellings as often as you can. Use the cursive handwriting! When reading: ask children to pick out nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs. Pick out punctuation and sentence types. Maths Practising basic skills: Number bonds to 20 Counting forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s. Quick addition and subtraction Practise times tables as often as you can!
