Don’t Make a Bad Situation Worse PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE

 Provide care for nearly 19,000 residents  Accounts for more than 65% of all long term care beds in the country  Recognises the challenges ahead - not merely a participant; a partner and driver of change NHI - A Vital part of the Health Sector PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE

Our Vision: “Having high quality nursing home care available to those who need it, is an essential part of a well- functioning Health Service. We aim to deliver the care people need in a way that is affordable, accessible and of the highest standard.” NHI - A Vital part of the Health Sector PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE

Decisions and actions that our Government and other public bodies take now will have a deep and lasting impact Key Moment PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE

 NHI members work on the front line of long term care  We provide a home, assistance and support to older people who can no longer live alone  Every day we see residents and their families struggling because of the chronic under- investment in long term care in Ireland PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE

Partnership  NHI has sought to work with the Minister, the HSE and HIQA as a partner and driver for change  We’ve worked to build trust and cooperation  NHI members have delivered on our part of the bargain  However, the Minister and the HSE have repeatedly broken that trust PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE

Our Campaign Strategy  Broad-based, nationwide campaign  Activating our nationwide presence through our members  National and local media  National and local lobbying  Members Survey  Support and campaign materials provided to NHI members PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE

Key messages for the Campaign  Don’t Make a Bad Situation Worse  Our older people deserve better  Four specific demands that will address the inequities, inconsistencies and inadequacy in funding of long term care PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE

1. Investment in Long Term Care PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE Large differences in public expenditures on long term care

NHI Demands: Increased investment in long term care and immediate enactment of the long awaited Fair Deal for older people PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE NHI demands:

2. Standards & Fees  NHI welcomes the publication of the National Quality Standards  NHI has a partnership role to play in implementing new standards and managing long term care  But the proposed HIQA Registration and Inspection Fee Structure is set at a punitive and unrealistic level, has outraged the sector. PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE

NHI demands: A registration & inspection fee structure not greater than a third of that in Northern Ireland, to reflect the lower investment in long term care in this State PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE NHI demands:

An acute hospital bed costs upwards of €7,000 per week. A public long stay bed cost €1,755 in A private and voluntary nursing home bed cost €1,000 per week in Nursing Home Cost of Care – A Fair Price, produced for Age Action by Horwath Bastow Charleton (2006) PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE 3. Value for Money

The Minister must insist on transparency, accountability, value for money and patient choice in the allocation of funds made available for long term care PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE NHI demands:

4. Contracts A deal is a deal, Minister – DDI and contract beds PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE

PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE That the HSE honour and fulfill its contracts with NHI members, and consult with NHI on proposals that may impact their members or the older people in their care NHI demands:

Campaign PROVIDING LEADERSHIPSUPPORTING MEMBERSPROMOTING EXCELLENCE  Strong united voice required  Consistently and regularly put pressure on the decision makers and those who influence them to take the right action  Postcards to the Minister  Lobby your local politicians  Complete the survey  Feedback to NHI Head Office What should members do for the campaign?
