 Between 1949 and million East Germans fled to escape communism.  This embarrassed East German leaders and the Berlin Wall was built.

 Built to keep East Germans from fleeing West to capitalist nations.  Life in West Germany was far better than the East.

 Began as a layer of barbed wire  Quickly turned into a barrier several layers deep, with watch towers, search lights, mines, and border guards.

 After the wall was built, many East Germans tried to escape into West Germany.  Many lost their lives attempting to do so.  A main way of escaping was building tunnels underneath the wall.

 Many lives lost  Violated the Four- Power control policy between the U.S., France, and Britain, with the Soviet Union. They didn’t want to do anything about it because they didn’t want to cause a shooting war.

 November 9, 1989  Thousands of East and West Germans gathered at the wall to protest, and eventually, just before midnight, soldiers and citizens began tearing down the wall.

 Chaotic situations  Crimes and violence increased  Opened up the world to East Germans  Signified collapse of communism
