EQ: How will career planning help you in the future? Objective : The students will be able to understand and apply steps in the career planning process and research careers with the most potential growth.

What is a career? ***A career is a goal for work that is fulfilled through an occupation or series of occupations***

Define occupation? ****An occupation is a task or series of tasks that is performed to provide a good or service. **** People are hired to fill occupations, and they are paid for the work they perform.

Career Planning is *** 1. The process of studying careers. 2. Assessing yourself in terms of careers 3. Making decisions about future careers.***

Do you think that you will stay with one career your whole life? No. New career opportunities occur all the time. This is called a **tentative career decision***, where you might decide to change careers if you find something you like to do more than before.

How do we find information about careers? ***Informational Interview-is a planned discussion with a worker who is willing to help you find out about the work they do.**** Web sites:

What kind of questions would you ask? 1. How did you get your current job? 2. Do you like your work, is it satisfying? Anything frustrating? 3. Are they any important qualifications? 4. What advice would you give a young person who might want to get into the field?

Job Shadow? What do you think it is? ****A job shadow is: where a company allows you to spend time with a worker for a day or week to learn about the job or occupation.****

Now, let’s start thinking about your potential career. There are steps in “career planning process”. How many do you think there are?

Portfolio Activity: Purpose is for you to develop a position in a company of your choice that matches your skills. Ways to research your Portfolio assignment: Occupational Outlook Quarterly Government web site that gives in-depth information on hundreds of occupations including job duties, working conditions, education and training requirements.
