The Lord’s Prayer Luke 11:1-4 and Matthew 6:5-13 Doug Withers 15 Nov 2015

The Lord’s Prayer Now it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of his disciples said to him, “Lord teach us to pray; as John also taught his disciples.” So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. Luke 11:1-4

1. A New Relationship – “Our Father”

Because you are loved and accepted you desire to do good works.

We are sons and daughters of God “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” - John 1:12

We are sons and daughters of God “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” - John 1:12 “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! …” - 1 John 3:1

2. Appropriate Respect – “Hallowed be your Name” “Hallowed” means “to treat as holy”

3. A New Priority – “Your Kingdom Come”

We are citizens of God’s Kingdom “But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Saviour.” - Philippians 3:20 “Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners [to God], but fellow citizens [of God’s kingdom] with the saints and members of the household of God.”- Ephesians 2:19

3. “Your Kingdom Come” The people who knew the apostles personally and those who came shortly after them are best qualified to tell us what the apostles taught about the kingdom to come.

3. “Your Kingdom Come” The Epistle of Barnabas, written around 100 A.D., anticipated the coming of the Antichrist and the return of Christ. Epistle of Barnabas Chapter 4

3. “Your Kingdom Come” Papias (a friend of John) writes that there will be a millennium after the resurrection of the dead when the personal reign of Christ will be established on the earth. Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History, Book 3, Chapter 39

3. “Your Kingdom Come” Justin Martyr who lived from 110 to 165 A.D. writes: “But I and others, …are assured that there will be a resurrection of the dead, and a thousand years in Jerusalem, which will then be built, adorned and enlarged, as the prophets Ezekiel and Isaiah and others declare”. Dialogue with Trypho, Chapter 80

3. “Your Kingdom Come” Ireneus wrote in the second century A.D that those who heard Jesus teach testified that Jesus taught a future literal millennial reign on the earth, a time when the earth will yield a richness unimagined. He said that the coming of Christ will be preceded by the Antichrist reigning 3 and 1/2 years in Jerusalem, setting Himself up as God Himself.

4. A New Submission – “Your Will be Done …”

“Don't copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”- Romans 12:2

5. A New Dependence- “Give us this day our daily bread.”

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the heathen seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:31-34

6. God’s Forgiveness – “Forgive Us Our Sins”

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” - 1 John 1:8-9

7. God’s Protection – “And do not Lead Us Into Temptation”

Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.- James 1:13

7. God’s Protection – “And do not Lead Us Into Temptation” Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.- James 1:13 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” - Ephesians 6:12

7. God’s Protection – “And do not Lead Us Into Temptation” “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.” - John 17:15

7. God’s Protection – “And do not Lead Us Into Temptation” “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” - 1 Corinthians 10:13
