I NTERIOR D ESIGN Savannah Perkins 2 nd period speech

Interior Designers make private homes, offices, restaurants, hospitals, hotels and theaters attractive and functional. They design interior spaces for additions, renovations and new construction. With my creativeness, I think that I would be very good at interior designing. I have been wanting to be an interior designer for a long time and this project has given me an opportunity to take a closer look at the details of being an interior designer.

E DUCATION & Q UALIFICATIONS Interior design requires a college education, preferably a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of applied arts degree. Knowledge of federal, state and local codes is also important. Some states require a license. Postsecondary education is necessary for entry-level positions in interior design. Training programs are available from professional design schools or from colleges and universities and usually take 2 to 4 years to complete. Graduates with a bachelor's degree usually qualify for a formal design apprenticeship program. If I choose to be an interior designer I will probably go to The Art Institutes of Atlanta (Georgia).

D UTIES & R ESPONSIBILITIES First an interior designer meets with the client to figure out their wants and needs. Then they combine this input with design expertise to produce concepts that are appropriate and functional and in accordance with codes and standards. The designer must then produce the final recommendations using paint and material examples to show the intended effect. They must also produce working drawings and specifications regarding the production, furniture, lighting and finishing materials. Designers then consult with other experts in matters of mechanical, electrical and load- bearing design. They use computers to create numerous designs so that the client can choose which one they want.

S KILLS & P ERSONALITY Interior Designers need creativity, imagination and persistence. They need to be open to new ideas and influences. People in this field need self-discipline to start projects on their own, budget their time and meet deadlines and production schedules.

W ORK ENVIRONMENTS, HOURS & LOCATIONS Deadlines and overtime are common for interior designers. If you were to be an interior designer you would have many different types of work locations. Architectural firms, department stores, home furnishing stores, hotels, restaurants, and individual people all employ interior designers. Freelance work- either part time or full time- is common. It is easy to spend 80 hours a week on a single project.

S ALARY Total Pay combines base annual salary or hourly wage, bonuses, profit sharing, tips, commissions, overtime pay and other forms of cash earnings, as applicable for this job. It does not include equity compensation, cash value of retirement benefits, or the value of other non-cash benefits. Yearly average is about $32,394 - $49,820. National Salary Data
