Agenda Current Events: Greece Weighs Austerity Cuts Management: Controlling

Current Events Greece Weighs Austerity Cuts What does it mean to ‘freeze civil services wages’? What is meant by, ‘there is only an European position’? Why are Greece’s civil service unions likely to resist many of the stated changes? Do you feel that the Plutocracy should pay for much of the debt that Greece has incurred?

Management Controlling What is the Controlling function of Management? “Controlling is a systematic exercise which is called as a process of checking actual performance against the standards or plans with a view to ensure adequate progress and also recording such experience as is gained as a contribution to possible future needs.”

Management Controlling Controlling is: Systematic A check of actual performance against planned performance Cyclical, which means it is never finished Utilizes experience to plan for improved results in the future or to reinforce positive performance

Management Controlling Controlling is a four-step process: Establishing performance standards based on the firm's objectives, measuring and reporting actual performance, comparing performance standards with actual performance, taking corrective or preventive action as necessary.

Management Functions

Managers and Leaders What is a Manager? What is a Leader?

Managers and Leaders Managers to Leader Why would Charisma be an important trait of a leader? What is meant by the ‘courage of your convictions’? Why do you believe it is important for people to trust a leader? What is meant by ‘the classic command and control management model’? Why would a leader be concerned about their employees? Why would listening be an important leadership skill?

Managers and Leaders Exercise Break into groups and identify 3 leaders, either business or political leaders, past or present and list as many traits as possible about why you feel they have been successful as leaders.
