LOSING WEIGHT IN YOUR OWN WAY! : USING THE OMRON MACHINE

Purpose Use the OMRON machine to assess a patient’s body fat percentage, body mass index (BMI), skeletal muscle, resting metabolism, visceral fat, body age and body weight so that an individual diet plan (which includes supplements and a healthy example of their ideal food menu) can be created

Project Abstract Today it is generally assumed that diet and exercise is the best way to lose weight. However, this is controversial because everyone’s body is different. As a result, an individualized diet plan is ideal. I assessed a patient’s body fat percentage, body mass index (BMI), skeletal muscle, resting metabolism, visceral fat, body age, and body weight by using a machine called an OMRON, which is a body composition scale and monitor. The results obtained from this machine, along with DNA samples from the patient, were used to create an individualized diet plan that will help the patient lose weight. This personalized and individualized

diet plan, which includes recommended supplements/ vitamins and an example of a healthy food menu according to the patient’s needs, was created by the Amway company, a global nutritional supplement. These personalized diet plans will help patients lose weight more effectively by targeting the specific functions and needs of their own bodies and also by tracing the genetic history of the patient’s family.

Procedure 1.Learn how to use the OMRON machine 2.Ask patients if they are interested in participating in the individualized diet plan program 3.If they said yes, use the OMRON machine to collect their body fat percentage, body mass index (BMI), skeletal muscle, resting metabolism, visceral fat, body age and body weight 4.Record this data on the “Health Assessment” form 5.Collect data from patients and compile this data

6. Explain to patients what their results mean 7. Share data with mentor so that he can compile this data and send it in to the Amway company. The results gained from the OMRON machine will be used with the DNA of the patients in order to create their own personalized diet plan that includes recommended supplements and an example of a healthy food menu. 8.Meet with the patients again in a month to see their progress in the weight loss program.

Learning Outcomes Throughout this year, I learned about numerous things and gained valuable skills and abilities both in the classroom and in my internship. In the classroom, I learned how to create my own personalized e-portfolio through the web portal Mahara. Additionally, I also participated in several presentations (ex. County-wide Oral Presentations) that have helped me improve on my public speaking skills. Through my internship, I have gained a greater appreciation for medicine. For my project, I learned how to use the OMRON machine and assess a patient’s body fat percentage, body mass index (BMI), etc. Through this project, I discovered the

local trends in obesity by collecting data from individuals and then compiling this data. Later, I learned to use this data in order to assess the progress of patients after a month and create an individualized diet plan based on that patient’s body needs and genetic family history.
