COGNITIVE ACADEMIC LANGUAGE LEARNING APPROACH (CALLA) Principles and Techniques

GOAL AND PROCESS GOALGOAL To prepare intermediate and advanced academic EAP students with the language necessary to learn through integration of language and content PROCESS 4 content areas to be phased in: science (much contextual support) math (less context support, restricted vocab) social studies (very context-dependent) language arts (most lang. Dependent)

PROCESS (cont’d) 3 components3 components curriculum that correlates with mainstream content courses language development integrated with content subjects instruction in use of learning strategies Need to address: contextual use of clues for comprehension task complexity (higher level reasoning) use of learning strategies (metacognitive, cognitive, social-affective) kind of knowledge necessary (declarative—what we know; procedural—how we learn)
