Probability of Independent and Dependent Events 11-5
Independent Events The occurrence of one event has no effect on the probability that a second event will occur. Example Erika rolls a 3 on one number cube and a 2 on another number cube.
Probability of Two Independent Events P(A and B) = P(A) P(B) Example Find the probability of flipping a coin and getting heads and then rolling a 6 on a number cube. P(heads and 6) = P(heads) P(6)
Dependent Events The occurrence of one event does have an effect on the probability that a second event will occur. Example A boy chooses a sock from a drawer of socks, then chooses a second sock without replacing the first.
Probability of Two Dependent Events P(A and B) = P(A) P(B after A) Example Find the probability of drawing a red marble from a bag of 6 red and 4 blue marbles, without replacing it, and then drawing a blue marble. P(red and blue) = P(red) P(blue after red)
Your Turn! Create your own independent event and dependent event. *Make sure you know the answer to each problem Then switch with your neighbor and have them find the probability of each event. Then discuss your answers with each other.
