CULTURE

What is culture? The way of life of a group of people who share similar beliefs and customs –T–These are called “cultural traits” –L–Language, religion, foods, clothes, holidays, etc. –S–Some traits easy to see; some aren’t

Language “the cornerstone of culture” –E–Every culture is based on it –W–Why is it important? COMMUNICATION! –M–Most people who speak same lang. share same beliefs & customs

Religion Also a basic part of culture What is the purpose of religion? –H–Helps people answer basic questions about life –P–Provides comfort & hope

Some people believe in one god (monotheism), some in many gods (polytheism), and some none at all (atheism). Religious differences have been problems for centuries, and still a problem today.

Social Groups How a culture organizes its people Every culture has one Some based on money, education, ancestry, etc. Family is most basic unit of any culture –N–Nuclear = immediate –E–Extended = other relatives

Government A system that sets up & enforces laws & institutions Some are controlled by a few people, some by many

Economic Systems System for producing, distributing, & consuming goods & services All countries ask: –W–What will be produced? –H–How will it be produced? –F–For whom will it be produced?

Technology Tools are available to be used by a culture to change and use natural resources. Why is it important? –H–Helps culture develop

Literacy Rates The percentage of people that can read and write in a country. Lower literacy rates mean a lower standard of living. Higher literacy rates mean a higher standard of living.
