Old Ideas from Greece The sun revolved around the Earth. Weight determines the speed of fall. All matter is made of four elements – 1.Earth 2.Fire 3.Water 4.Air

The Greeks Explain through observation only. Geocentric Theory – the Earth was the center of the universe. The Church supported this idea. Why?

Development of New Ideas Age of Exploration encouraged new ways of thinking. Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes helped to develop the Scientific Method. Bacon relied on experimentation. Descartes focused on doubting things until proven by reason. Scientific Method – a new way of investigation involving five basic steps.

Scientific Method 1.Identify the problem 2.Form a hypothesis that can be tested 3.Perform experiments to test the hypothesis 4.Record the results 5.Analyze the results to form a conclusion to either proves or disproves the hypothesis

Astronomy, Math, and Physics Nicolaus Copernicus realized that the sun was the center of the solar system. Heliocentric Theory – the idea that the earth revolves around the sun. Copernicus published his findings prior to his death.

Astronomy, Math, and Physics Galileo – found Copernicus’ theory to be correct. He was placed under house arrest for the rest of his life in The Church forced him to denounce his theory. Sir Isaac Newton – developed calculus and discovered gravity.

Biology and Chemistry Robert Boyle – the father of modern chemistry. Investigation on anatomy and the make up of living things. Leeuwenhoek – bacteria, blood cells, and yeast.

Science and Society The Roman Catholic Church opposed many of the scientists’ views. Some theories were embraced later, however. Art changed as a result of a new knowledge of anatomy. Scholars sought new understandings about society.

Big Questions How would our world be different without some of these discoveries? What questions are scientists working to solve today? How did these discoveries effect the society of that day?
