FCC Week April 2016 Rome FCC collaboration “fire safety” S. La Mendola and M. Plagge HSE/SEE/XP R. Trant TE/HDO 14/04/2016 2

ITSF: a time-tested forum for exchanges on safety S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016

Fire safety challenges shared by different physics laboratories S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016

Why fire safety justifies a common effort? Fire safety objectives for ordinary surface buildings are reached through compliance with prescriptive compulsory rules. Example: R of French labor code prescribes that “The maximum evacuation distance to reach a stair is never longer than 40 m”. For unique infrastructures such as the FCC, fire safety objectives are satisfied by performance-based design. S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016 Smoke propagation simulations Probabilistic assessments Evacuation simulations Fire modelling Structural fire resistance

Workshop in Lund, a first confirmed commitment to collaborate S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016

Main topicSub-topic Hazard characterization Burning behavior of commonly present items Fire simulations Oxygen Deficiency Hazard Flammable gases Passive fire protection Active fire protection systems Fire detection Fire extinction Smoke extraction and ventilation Intervention of rescue teams Life safety in underground facilities Evacuation of occupants Fire risk methodologies and tools Collection, analysis and use of statistics RAMS aspects FCC study: a great opportunity to cooperate! 7 Workshop in Lund: collaboration topics S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016

Current members of the FCC fire collaboration S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016 Jülich Research Centre (DE) joined the collaboration after the workshop in Lund. A CERN PhD student from the university of Wuppertal (DE) is also involved.

Fire protection: workshop at CERN It marked a milestone in the collaboration road map; It included the following topics: Day 1 Air management (smoke extraction) in radioactive facilities Intervention strategies of fire brigade teams Fixed extinguishing systems Day 2 Burning behavior of electric cables Computational fire simulations Performance-based structural fire design Evacuation simulations Draft standards for mine safety S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016

Status of FCC fire collaboration MoUs signed by all participants; Technical contents for all Institute Agreements (IAs) are defined; Two IAs (ESS and Univ. of Lund) already registered (Remaining IAs will soon be finalized); Monthly Video conferences; Regular data sharing via FermiPoint; Video conferences on specific subjects. S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016 Memorandum of understanding Institute Agreement

Structure of deliverables 1/2 S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016 OECD = Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development

Structure of deliverables 2/2 S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016

Fire Initiation Method of moments The estimated fire frequencies (per component) can be used to calibrate the prior distribution of λ Poisson process: probability of x initiation events in a certain reference period t New data from particle physics laboratories Example WP1.4: Shared approach on data collection and processing S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016 ~

What’s next Additional institutions might be interested in joining the collaboration. A workshop on fire safety will be included in ITSF 2016: opportunity to present the advancements to a larger audience. S. La Mendola HSE/SEE/XP 14/04/2016
