SALES TAX AND TIP February 2, 2016
Tax and Tip ◦ Sales Tax is an additional percent added to the amount of money one spends on goods or services. Sales Tax is set by government officials and the money collected for taxes is returned to the local, state or federal government. The sales tax for Wake County is 6.75% ◦ A tip is given to someone for the services they supplied to you. Some people you may tip include: your waiter/waitress, hair stylist, Uber driver, Valet, and Pizza delivery person. The total cost is the original price plus the tip. ◦ Both a Tip and a Tax are calculated by finding the percent of a number. Then each of them need to be added to the original amount.
Tax ◦ Example: You went shopping at Aeropostale and spent $50 on clothes. North Carolina State Law mandates a 6.75% sales tax on clothes. Find the total amount you spent at Aeropostale. ◦ Step 1: Find 6.75 of $50 ◦ Step 2: Add $ = $53.38
Tax ◦ Jonah bought $4.50 worth of candy at the Kangaroo Gas Station. The sales tax on the candy is 5.5 %. What was Jonah’s total cost?
◦ Eleanor bought a Hoverboard Scooter after Christmas for $ The sales tax on the scooter was 6%. What was the total coast of the Hoverboard? Tax
Tip ◦ You and a friend went to Red Robin for milkshakes. You spent $10 (including tax) and would like to tip your waitress 15% of your bill. Find the total amount you spent at Red Robin.
Tip ◦ The Minecraft Club ordered seven pizzas, $8 each for their end of year celebration. If they tip the delivery person from Papa Johns 20%, how much was the total cost?
Putting it Together ◦ The Jaguar Team teacher went to dinner at Brixx’s Pizza. Their total bill was $65. If the tax rate is 7%, what was their total bill? ◦ Now that you know their total bill, how much money will they give their waitress if they give her a 25% tip for her excellent service? ◦ Lastly, the Jaguar Team would like to split the bill ( including food, tax and tip) between the four of them. How much will each teacher pay?
