GLASS MARKET SITUATION IN ITALY Bucharest

1. MARKET SITUATION  Glass packaging production: ton (+ 1,41% of 2012) NB: Peak year 2008: ton  Use of glass cullet: ton (- 2,1% of 2012)  green: 65%  white: 4%  half white: 31%  Import: ton = minimum over 10 years (- 31% of 2012)  Flat glass used: ton (= 2012) Rate of recycling (flat glass cullet included) = 56,9%

2. COLLECTION OF GLASS Data CO.RE.VE:collection of ton (+ 2,81% of 2012) collection rate: collected glass / packaging glass released for consumption in Italy = 78,6% Quality very poor and below EU level: ± 3% impurities  waste during sorting: 13 – 14% part of it (micronized glass < 900µ) used in glassworks or ceramic Collection by area (data 2012) North: 63,72% Center: 16,08% South & Islands: 20,20%

2. COLLECTION OF GLASS Collection systems diversified:  roadside containers (glass – glass bottles – metallic cans)  industrial containers at recycling center  kerbside collection  Comingled collection (glass – plastic – cans): worst quality  Higher costs of treatment due to discontinuity and great variety of materials

3. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS Development of CO.RE.VE. activities during the last 10 years with collection development mainly in Center-South of Italy but further development still needed. Waste treatment companies excluded from management decisions of CO.RE.VE.  conflicts. Legislation:no changes use of glass in road beds still forbidden. Perspectives 2014: strong demand for cullet from the glass packaging glassworks  positive effect on solid market positions.
