Objective 3.0 –Strategies to enhance personal relationships Eliminate stress factors

Objective 3.01: Factors that affect relationships

A. Family, friends, and peers Show respect for others by taking their ideas seriously Be trustworthy by being honest with others Be willing to compromise (both give up something to get something) when necessary

B. Self-concept People with a poor self-concept tend to have a negative image of themselves The way you feel about yourself is your self-esteem

C. Stress Being fired from your job

D. Dating 1. Healthy 2. Unhealthy Serves a significant purpose because it allows people to learn what qualities they like in a person

E. Sexual abstinence Teenagers who sign an abstinence pledge promise to postpone sexual activity Learning refusal skill can help a teenager remain abstinent

Objective 3.02 The consequences and risks of youth parenting. Youth parents can feel the emotional feeling of isolation, despair and frustration

A. Consequences to youth parents 1.Financial: Social services can help, but the younger the girl is when she has a child, the more likely she is to live in poverty. Expenses start even before the baby is born 2.Social: Must give up activities with friends 3. Physical: Toxemia

Toxemia or Preeclampsia DO NOT NEED TO COPY ALL OF THIS High Blood Pressure and protein in the urine develop after the 20th week (late 2nd or 3rd trimester) of pregnancy Symptoms –Swelling of the hands and face/eyes (edema) –Weight gain More than 2 pounds per week Sudden weight gain over days Severe Preeclampsia: –Headaches that are dull or throbbing and will not go away –Abdominal pain, mostly felt on the right side, underneath the ribs. Pain may also be felt in the right shoulder, and can be confused with heartburn, gallbladder pain, a stomach virus, or the baby kicking –Agitation –Decreased urine output, not urinating very often –Nausea and vomiting (worrisome sign) –Vision changes -- temporary loss of vision, sensations of flashing lights, auras, light sensitivity, spots, and blurry vision Treatment –Deliver the baby usually 37 weeks or later

Consequences to parents (cont.) 4. Emotional 5. Future/career: Give up to earn money to support child Often lose opportunity to go to college, lose scholarship money

B. Risks for children 1.Health: something as simple as taking aspirin can affect the health of an unborn child Smoking cigarettes can lead to premature births and underweight babies More likely to have lower than average birth weight Drinking alcohol can lead to birth defects such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
