Comparison of CCSSM and NCTM Approaches to Process… CCSSM Standards for Mathematical Practices Principles and Standards Process Standards 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Problem Solving Communication Representation 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively Problem Solving Reasoning and Proof 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Reasoning and Proof Communication Representation 4. Model with mathematicsProblem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Connections, Representation

Comparison of CCSSM and NCTM Approaches to Process CCSSM Standards for Mathematical Practices Principles and Standards Process Standards 5. Use appropriate tools strategically Problem Solving Representation 6. Attend to precisionProblem Solving Communication 7. Look for and make use of structure Problem Solving Reasoning and Proof Connections 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning Problem Solving Connections

How To Read Grade Level Standards Standards define what students should understand and be able to do. Clusters are groups of related standards. Domains are larger groups of related standards. Standards from different domains may sometimes be closely related. Number and Operations in Base Ten 3.NBT Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. 1. Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

PA Common Core Standards… Standards for Mathematical Content 2.1 Numbers and Operations A) Counting and Cardinality B) Number and Operations in Base Ten C) Number and Operations—Fractions D) Ratios and Proportional Relationships E) The Number System F) Number and Quantity 2.2 Algebraic Concepts A) Operations and Algebra Thinking B) Expressions & Equations C) Functions D) Algebra

PA Common Core Standards Standards for Mathematical Content 2.3 Geometry A) Geometry 2.4 Measurement, Data and Probability A) Measurement and Data B) Statistics and Probability

CC B.1CC B.1CC B.1 Extend the counting sequence to read and write numerals to represent objects. Use place value concepts to represent amounts of tens and ones and to compare three digit numbers. Apply place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. PA Standards – Numbers and Base Ten Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3

Archdiocese of Philadelphia – Gr. 3 Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. [A range of algorithms may be used.] 3.NBT.1. Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or NBT.2. Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. 3.NBT.3. Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 using strategies based on place value and properties of operations. Number and Operations in Base Ten
