PSB extraction and transfer kickers LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November L. Sermeus

Content Kickers involved (reminder) Specifications Work to be done Resources and planning EVM data Conclusion LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November 20152

KICKERS INVOLVED Extraction BE.KFA14L1 Transfer BT1.KFA10, BT4.KFA10 & BT2.KFA20 LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November extraction transfer

Extraction BE.KFA14L1 LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November vacuum tank installed ~ magnets (4 per ring, 2 types) designed for 800 MeV beam deflection No spare All magnets have been refurbished in 2000 for the 1.4 GeV upgrade. The poor quality glued original ferrite blocks have been replaced by C shaped ones of 8C11 type.

Extraction BE.KFA14L1 LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November generator per ring supplies for magnets in parallel (magnets are in short-circuit mode) PFL made of 4×25 W SF 6 cables in // Transmission cables same type as PFLs Maximum design voltage 60 kV (current 9600 A in thyratron given for 8 kA) Pulse length ~1600 ns (fixed) Installed in 2000

Transfer BT.KFA10 LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November vacuum tank installed ~ magnets (2 per ring, 2 types) designed for 800 MeV beam deflection Glued ferrite C cores of unknown type (could be 8C1, 4L1 or 4H1, 4L1 is assumed) No spare

Transfer BT.KFA10 LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November generator per ring (2&3) supplies two magnets in parallel (magnets are in short- circuit mode) PFL made of 4×25 W SF 6 cables in // Transmission cables same type as PFLs Maximum design voltage 60 kV (current 9600 A in thyratron given for 8 kA max) Pulse length ~1600 ns (fixed) Installed in 1999

Transfer BT2.KFA20 LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November vacuum tank refurbished in magnets designed for 800 MeV beam deflection (same as BT.KFA10 ones) 1 fully operational spare exists Ferrite type is CMD5005

Transfer BT2.KFA20 LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November generator (magnets are charged with the PFL) PFL made of 4×25 W SF 6 cables in // Transmission cables same type as PFLs Maximum working voltage is 37 kV (magnet breakdown if higher) Pulse length ~3000 ns (fixed)

Specifications Beam energy increase from 1.4 GeV to 2 GeV. Rise time (2-98)% (EDMS: ): 105 ns maximum for all kickers. What does it mean? Magnet currents have to be increased by 30 % and consequently PFL voltages. (Note: it’s 46 % more than the original specification at 800 MeV) This leads to ~55kV for extraction and transfer (BT.KF10); 36.5 kV for BT2.KFA20. Rise times have to be checked to see if they need improvements. LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November

Work (to be) done: BE.KFA14L1 1. Measure the kick linearity from present operating voltage 42.5 kV to the required 55 kV. (done on similar magnets installed in modified tank 2L1 in Sal5 test cage) Test performed and no saturation observed. 2. Make CATIA 3D models and 2D drawings of the present vacuum tank, magnets, connection boxes. Drawings made by EN\MME and received. Waiting for our feedback. Tank drawings checked ok by P. Faure. Tank drawings sent to TE\VSC for comments and improvements in July. No reply up to now. Magnet drawings check on-going (by me). Time consuming and several unknowns due to missing (not micro-filmed) drawings. LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November

Work to be done: BE.KFA14L1 3. In order to build a spare, study and modify existing magnet designs to -increase the ferrite cross sectional area in order to be sure to avoid saturation in the ends. -redesign the capacitive plates to have a uniform construction without missing plates. -add transition pieces between magnets, magnets and tank. -modify magnet configuration to have all ground conductors at the same side. Not started yet. To be done preferably by ABT design office. 4. Build a spare tank equipped with new magnets and install it in the PSB. Not started yet (installation not necessary as kick linearity ok). 5. Replace present tank by the new one and modify it according to the new design. Can only start after LS2 if tank is removed (not advised!). LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November

Work (to be) done: BT.KFA10 1. Measure present kicker rise time as it doesn’t fit the predicted values. Measurement performed in the ring. It seems that the poor rise time is due to the present assumed 4L1 ferrite. Measurements will be hopefully repeated in December with a better vertical resolution scope. LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November BT1.KFA10 Kick rise time (2-98)% -measured 121ns -simulated 8C11: 101ns -simulated 4L1: 125ns

Work to be done: BT.KFA10 2. Make CATIA 3D models and 2D drawings of the present vacuum tank, magnets, connection boxes. 3D models ready. EN\MME waiting for our feedback before doing 2D drawings. Ferrite cross sectional area to be increased to prevent saturation at the ends. 3. Build a spare tank equipped with new magnets (with new ferrite blocks) and install it in the PSB. Not started yet. Ferrite cross sectional area to be increased to prevent saturation at the ends. The magnet configuration must be slightly modified to pulse them from the same side. The magnet design must be checked and drawings updated before start. This work should have the highest priority. 4. Measure spare BT2.KFA20 (equipped with 8C11 ferrite) in BT.KFA10 configuration in the lab.(SAL5) Not started yet. (Other priorities!!) 5. Modify the present tank after exchange to have a spare. LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November

Work to be done: BT2.KFA20 1. Perform measurements in the ring to confirm the predicted rise time better than 105ns. Measurements will be hopefully made in December. Vacuum chamber to be opened to install a magnetic field probe and measure the kick of one magnet. Improvements, if necessary, to be studied after the measurement. LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November

Resources and planning LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November BT.KFA10 must have the highest priority and a new design must be completed by the end of June 2016 to launch the price inquiries. ABT manpower required: From 01/01/2016 to 30/06/2016: 0.3 FTE (me!), 0.2 FTE (fellow) for the design, 2 man.month (ABT FSU) to finalise the drawings. From 01/07/2016 to 31/12/2016: 0.3 FTE to launch the fabrication and follow the contracts. In 2017: 0.1 FTE (me!),1 FTE (technician), 1 man.month (ABT FSU) to build and test the tank. (+ TE\VSC staff or FSU for the vacuum tests) BE.KFA14L1 modification studies to be delayed until the completion of the new BT.KFA10 design. Priorities to be redefined at that time. ABT manpower required: o 0.3 FTE (me!), 0.2 FTE (fellow) for the design, 2 man.month (ABT FSU) to finalise the drawings. o 0.3 FTE to launch the fabrication and follow the contracts. o 0.1 FTE (me!),1.5 FTE (technician), 1.5 man.month (ABT FSU) to build and test the tank. (+ TE\VSC staff or FSU for the vacuum tests) BT2.KFA20: work to be determined. Nothing in the best scenario.

EVM LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November Year PV EV AC BE.KFA14 & BT.KFA10 magnets Year PV EV AC The budget looks ok but the main expenses will be delayed by one year.

Conclusion LIU TE-ABT review, 20 November The LIU specifications should be met with the present extraction kicker and a new BT.KFA10 kicker. Uncertainties about BT2.KFA20 should be removed at the end of this year after the measurements in the machine.
