Leadership & Change Management Leadership & Change Management April 19, 2013

“Where there is no vision, the people perish” Proverbs 29:18 PLANNER STRATEGIST PRACTITIONER VISIONARY focused radical flexible incremental

Why Vision?  Vision becomes the rallying cry of the organization, ‘how it finds fulfillment’  Vision is the real reason for existence  Vision keeps everyone focused  Vision facilitates all decisions

Why Vision?  Visions are just words unless management convinces employees they are important enough to live by … a vision statement does not make a company … it requires relentless attention to living the values. Tushman & O’Reilly 2002

A Vision:  Gives focus to human energy  Encourages unity  Provides purpose  Fosters risk taking  Enhances Leadership  Promotes Excellence  Sustains organizations

Visions fail because of:  Not being taken seriously  Fuzzy – non-specific  Lack of true leadership  Being words without action  Poor implementation

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”- Lombardi

The City’s Mission  … creating a better quality of life

In May, 2007, six major water and wastewater associations and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) signed a historic agreement pledging to support Effective Utility Management, collectively and individually, throughout the water sector.
